Nine US research scholars' visas denied (India)
Posted on : Wed, 14 Mar 2007 12:47:01 GMT

New Delhi, March 14 Nine scholars from the US were denied visas to pursue their research projects in India because of the sensitivity of their assignments, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.

Of the 926 proposals received during last year from foreign nationals of all countries, approvals were given to 742 research projects, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said here.

'Of these approvals, 67 cases were from US scholars sponsored by the United States Education Foundation of India,' he said.

Notable among the list of nine scholars who were denied visas for their research studies included Banwari Benlal Kedia's 'Prospects and problems of outsourcing for India's economic growth', Tariq Tapa's 'The Imaginary princess: A Muslim girl's story', Forrest Fleischman's 'Political empowerment and biodiversity protection in Kerala', Christine Davis' 'Language ideologies in Mumbai's schools and Keya Mitra's 'Liberation vs exploitation: Women's struggle for empowerment'.
