Kerry Mortgages Home to Keep Campaign Afloat
Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) announced yesterday that he is putting $850,000 of his own money into his presidential campaign and will put more in as soon as he gets a mortgage on his home on Beacon Hill in Boston.

Aides acknowledged that the personal contribution was crucial to keeping the campaign afloat at a time when expenditures are rising and fundraising has been falling.

(snip)

Kerry has rejected public financing to avoid spending limits that accompany the taxpayer subsidies. Two other candidates, President Bush and former Vermont governor Howard Dean, have rejected public financing, but Bush and Dean intend to raise the additional money from individual donors, not from their own assets.

Sources said Kerry was close to running out of money to finance his campaign. After getting off to a fast start, raising more than $7 million in the first quarter of 2003, sources said he is likely to raise between $1 million and $2 million in the final three months of the year, just when demands for travel, staff and television advertising are escalating rapidly.

3. Dumb question here...
Why can't his wife with all her millions loan him a couple million dollars and just get on with the campaign?

5. minefield
if a loan, he's better off getting it from a bank. I don't think she could pay off this loan either since it would be the same as financing his campaign. She is limited to $2000 a year, just like us.

14. That would be good money after bad.
Trust me , unfortunately I have some experience in this field. There comes a time, namely whrn Big AL passes you in the polls, when you have to let the dream fade away. Sorry, Sharton is really making me proud. I never gave him a chance but always gave him kudos for being the best orator. I am glad to see that people actually listen to a candidates words beyond their color or their "popular" standing.

15. she can't
it's against campaign finance laws for Theresa Heinz to donate huge sums of $$ to Kerry's campaign. She can only give $2000.

He simply can't raise the Benjamins like Dean.

10. Kerry is embarrassing himself
Dean raises money at will, and Kerry's sources have dried up.

I had such respect for Kerry before this campaign. We are so lucky that he will not be the nominee.

11. I disagree.
Senator Kerry is hardly "embarassing himself."

12. Tell that to my nephew.
The one who lies in Walter Reed, with a spine severed by an Iraqui bullet. The one who is a 23 year old quadraplegic. The one who was sent to Iraq thanks to those who didn't have enough of a backbone to tell President Asshole to go to hell.

My nephew wasn't fighting for America. he was fighting so Dick Cheney could steal even more money from the American Taxpayer. Kerry, Liberman, Gephardt and Edwards gave President Asshole a blank check. I cannot forgive them for that. Ever.

16. My thoughts are with your Nephew.
My brother was in Iraq too. Fortunately he's okay and back in the States. I'm not sure why my family is far luckier than thousands of others this holiday season, but I am grateful. I'm sorry to hear about this unfortunate news.

13. Any of you guys ever done something like that? Lighten up.
Yes, he's wealthy. Yes, he comes from money.

Regardless, he's putting his money where his mouth is, and as someone who's done similar things, I say he gets some points for that.

On the other hand, it's not like he's risking his all on a game of pitch and toss; lotsa folks have mortgages...

Interesting.
