Rove defends Bush administration firing of U.S. attorneys

LITTLE ROCK - Presidential adviser Karl Rove on Thursday defended the Bush administration's firing of several U.S. attorneys, stressing the positions serve at the pleasure of the president.

"My view is this is unfortunately a very big attempt by some in the Congress to make a political stink about it," Rove told a crowd of more than 700 at an event hosted by the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. "The question is, did they have the same reaction if they were in the Congress in the '90s or did they have the same reaction if they were in the '80s? Every president comes in and appoints U.S. attorneys and then makes changes over the course of their time."

...

Rove said some of the attorneys were "removed for cause," while others were removed over performance issues. The administration removed one attorney for refusing to asking for the death penalty in a case, which Rove referred to as "against policy." As for fired attorney Carol Lam of San Diego, Calif., Rove said officials removed her for failing to file immigration cases.

However, a Justice Department official told a House panel this week Cummins fell into none of the categories laid out by Rove.

"This is normal and ordinary," Rove said. "What happened in this instance was there were seven done all at once and people wanted to play politics with it."

3. They removed the USA's because
THEY were playing politics. Rove cannot turn the argument back against the public. This is the most blatant example of the Administration's poor administration--get rid of competent people who play a key role in the provision of justice in order to install incompetents and croneys.

8. Of COURSE he defends it
It was probably his idea. His idea to push the investigation forward in NM of a Democrat, just before the elections. His idea to get rid of those pesky U.S. attorneys who investigated people like Duke Cunningham. This has Rove's pudgy fingers all over it.

11. Keep talking Turd Blossom
you're just helping dig a deeper hole for this maladministration. Here cometh the backlash. First the deplorable and criminal conditions at Walter Reid and the entire ****up with the VA, Libby tried and convicted, Congressional hearings for political firings of SA's - next testimony and review of the Fitzgerald findings.....I think our Dems in Congress have a plan and it's going to be drip, drip, drip until the public is screaming "IMPEACH THE BASTARDS".

17. Karl Rove, Susan Ralston, Barry Jackson, Ken Mehlman, Ruben Barrales, Jennifer Farley
all of you were known to have been Jack Abramoff White House contacts by the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee-and today even more is known about your networks and criminal operations.

House Oversight Committee: The Abramoff Investigation/White House contacts

The complexity of the corruption has been watched by politically involved citizens for years, despite all the distractions, psy-ops and propaganda of this installed administration.

Here's another reminder-and still a useful parent thread for researchers deconstructing the layered and interconnected corruption

lay bare the BFEE claim to "executive privilege" in trying to prevent him from testifying in public?

21. You can always tell who screwed up by who they send to fix it
This has been a consistent mo of the Bush Administration. Every time something goes wrong, Bush yells, "OK, this was your bright idea, so get out there and fix it." The fact that the normally press reclusive Rove has been so outspoken lately testifies to the obvious -- that he was the one who initiated the firing of the USAs for political reasons.

22. Chiara sought the death penalty in a case even though she correctly thought it was a bad idea
I'm assuming that when kkkarl refers to a US atty who refused to seek the death penalty, he's referring to Margaret Chiara (I suppose it could be another situation, but hers is the one that's been reported). She is opposed to the death penalty and has generally not sought it. She is in Michigan and Michigan has no death penalty on the books at the state level and no one has been executed in the state since 1938. In the past, US Atty's have generally declined to seek the death penalty even where federal law allows for it if they are in a state with no death penalty statute.

In any event, Chiara was directed, against her better judgement, to seek the death penalty in a case. She did so and, lo and behold, the jury refused to impose the death penalty. So I guess she's being punished for having better judgment than the idiots in the DOJ that told her how to do her job.

23. Rove knows they were "removed for cause"
And yet doesn't want to testify in open session about it. How very strange that he wouldn't want a public record that would settle the matter once and for all with his sworn statement to a congressional committee. Instead, the matter keeps dragging on and on, almost as if the White House has something to hide, like it's done something wrong.
