3. King Abdullah is an extremely intelligent and thoughtful man
He's even married to a Palestinian and managed to have decent relations with Israel.

BushCo would do well to listen to him.

5. and yet there is this: Jordan to resume conscription
Jordan's king urges US to 'take risks' for Mideast peace
1 hour, 9 minutes ago

AMMAN (AFP) - Jordan has decided to resume limited military conscription for men and women, eight years after it was suspended, a state-run news agency reported on Wednesday.

The government endorsed a bill at a weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday to restore conscription from this year for 18-year-olds lasting for a three-month period instead of the previous two-year service, Petra news agency said.

The draft law will be submitted to parliament for approval.

Last month Prime Minister Maaruf Bakhit announced plans to restore conscription "to bolster discipline and the spirit of nationalism in the minds of youths".

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Jordan's King Abdullah II on Wednesday called on the United States to help end the "bitter legacy of disappointment and despair" in the Palestinian territories and to "take risks" to help achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East.

"Sixty years of Palestinian dispossession -- forty under occupation -- a stop-and-go peace process, all this has left a bitter legacy of disappointment and despair, on all sides," the Jordanian leader told a joint session of the US Congress.

"It is time to create a new and different legacy, one that begins now, one that can set a positive tone for the American and Middle East relationship," he said.

"It begins with courage and vision," Abdullah declared. "We must all of us take risks for peace."

As part of a five-day working visit to the United States, King Abdullah II was due to meet President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Robert Gates before delivering an address to to a joint session of Congress -- an honor reserved for close US allies.
