Why deal with the fallout from a pardon, when Libby could get out on his own?

If the appeals fail, then bush gets stuck with pardoning made-man Libby -- which he will do unless Libby tries to cut a deal for sentence reduction or some such.

NEW YORK White House spokeswoman Dana Perino this afternoon said President Bush would have no comment on the verdict in the CIA leak case, beyond, "He respects the jury's verdict" and "He was saddened for Scooter Libby and his family."

She said that the press would be "disappointed to hear" that the White House was going to stand by its rule adopted long ago that it would "not comment on an ongoing legal procedure."

The trial was over but it would be appealed, she said, guaranteeing no comment, probably, before Bush finishes out his term in office.

(quietly of course). Cheney's influence has finally started to ebb with Condi picking up some clout that he used to have. His office looks bad now and his health is not good either. Plus Bush probably could use something dramatic to shake things up and maybe even short circuit further investigation of the Plame outing by Cheney's office.

Plus if he picks one of the Republican presidential contenders, and that person can survive confirmation by a Democratic Senate, he might give that person a boost in the 2008 election.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush respects the guilty verdict against former top White House aide Scooter Libby but is "saddened" for him and his family, a Bush spokeswoman said Tuesday.

On hearing television news reports of the conviction, Bush "said he respected the jury's verdict, that he was saddened for Scooter Libby and his family," spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters.

Perino refused to discuss whether Bush would consider pardoning Libby, who was found guilty of obstruction of justice and perjury in a case closely tied to the flawed case for war in Iraq, saying she was "aware of no such request."

"As is afforded to all Americans, there is a process that is followed in which to apply for a pardon. And I don't think that speculating on a wildly hypothetical situation at this time is appropriate," she said.
