JFK Warship Makes Last Call in Boston

BOSTON (AP) -- The USS John F. Kennedy returned to the 35th president's home state Thursday for the last time before it goes out of service later this month.

''Big John,'' as the aircraft carrier is called, will stay in Boston for five days before heading to Mayport, Fla., for decommissioning. It will be maintained on inactive status in Philadelphia.

1. Sad
But the ship is 40 years old and I recall it has had some problems with maintenance over the last few years (I think it was underfunded, but don't recall exactly).

2. I will join you.
JFK was president when I was a teenager, and made a huge impression on me at the right time.

3. I have steamed with the Kennedy on a number of occasions
I was on a ship that accompanied her to Boston's 300th anniversary celebration.

We used to call her the "Kan-Opener" due to an unfortunate collision with the USS Belknap:

She is also part of one of my favorite moments in the Navy. We were operating in the mid Atlantic as a strike force. My ship refueled from the Kennedy and as we broke away at flank speed (petal to the metal) the ships break-away song was played on the outside speakers. The song was the theme from Rocky. On a beautiful dawn with glassy smooth seas the deck crew of the Kennedy started shadow boxing up and down her flight deck. It was quite a site.

Rest well fair lady.
