Iraqi President Jalal Talabani Falls Ill
Associated Press 02.25.07, 1:11 PM ET

President Jalal Talabani is ill and has flown to neighboring Jordan
for medical treatment, his office said Sunday, adding there was
"no cause for worry."

The brief statement said only that the 73-year-old Talabani had
fallen ill because of "continuing hard work over the past few days."

Talabani, a Kurd, appeared in public Saturday in the Kurdish city
of Sulaimaniyah where he met with U.S. Ambassador Zalmay
Khalilzad and Massoud Barzani, leader of the self-rule Kurdish
region in northern Iraq.

1. earlier news: Iraqi ministry casts doubt on oil law
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Oil Ministry cast doubt Sunday on statements indicating the Kurds had agreed to support a draft oil law that would divide revenues among all Iraqi factions and meet a key U.S. benchmark in Iraq.

~snip~

Massoud Barzani, president of the self-governing Kurdish administration in the north, said Saturday that he and President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, had discussed the latest draft law by telephone with al-Maliki and "the results were good."

Barzani made the comments in a joint press conference with Talabani after a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad in the northern Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah.

~snip~

It was unclear if Barzani was saying he supported the idea of a law or the draft as currently worded. Kurdish officials could not be reached for clarification.

4. Oil, did you mention oil? sarcasm
You also mentioned that there could be a disagreement with the Iraqi govt. about the oil law/contracts? And now a Kurd, President Talabani, has become ill and had to leave the country??

Sure makes your ears perk up doesn't it. If the oil issue could be decided on between the 3 factions there is no doubt that the killings would diminish. We hear so little on this issue with the Iraq govt. Oil makes the wheels turn in iraq. It isn't date palms.

3. Iraqi President Suffers Stroke

(CBS/AP) Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has suffered a stroke and traveled to Jordan for treatment, reportsCBS News reporter Kristin Gillespie in Amman, Jordan.

A spokesman in Talabani's office confirmed to CBS News in Baghdad that the president has had a "small stroke" and is now in Amman.

Which means he is probably dead. Seriously, Arabs hate to be the bearer of bad news, so when they have something bad to tell you, they start off with some minor ailment. It's a cultural thing.

OK DU geniuses, how will this upset the apple cart of power in Iraq?

7. Who is the # 2 ? seems a promotion is due if he cannot return to office
being 73 and in a country where hospitals need hospitalization, the health system isn't going to supply the treatment one would expect a head of state to receive

6. Let me get this straight ...
the President of the country has a heart attack, so HE GOES TO ANOTHER COUNTRY? That's saying a lot about the status of health care there.

Let freedom reign!

9. Iraq's Talabani health "normal and stable"
BAGHDAD, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's health is "completely normal and stable", his office said on Monday, a day after he was flown to a hospital in neighbouring Jordan because of low blood pressure.

"The initial results of the medical tests showed that his condition is completely normal and stable. There is no need to worry. The vital and basic parts of his body are all in good condition," a statement said, adding Talabani was fully conscious and in good spirits.

Talabani was admitted to the specialist King Hussein Medical Centre in Amman on Sunday after being flown from Sulaimaniya in northern Iraq. A close aide to Talabani, who is in his early 70s, on Sunday denied media reports he had had a heart attack.

The statement said Talabani had "suffered from fatigue, which led to a loss of a lot of liquids from his body". It said he would undergo further medical tests in Amman.
