U.S. Troops Smash Into Homes, Shops in Major Raid to Hunt for Guerrillas in Turbulent City

SAMARRA, Iraq (AP) - U.S. troops blasted down the gates of homes, raising cries of women and children inside, and smashed in doors of workshops and junkyards in a massive raid Wednesday to hunt for pro-Saddam Hussein militants and stamp out the increasingly bold anti-U.S. resistance.

The loud blasts mixed with the sound of women and children screaming inside the houses. At one point, there was a short exchange of gunfire, but it was not immediately clear what happened. snip

At another home, an explosion ignited a small fire.

Elsewhere, a suspect was punched in the head and a soldier said: "You're dead. You're dead."

The raid, launched before dawn and lasting until mid-morning, targeted the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad, where U.S. officials say some 1,500 fighters operate - making it one of the persistent hotspots in the so-called "Sunni Triangle."

1. That last quoted paragraph has me stumped...
In Baghdad, a fuel truck exploded after colliding with a bus at an intersection, killing 10 Iraqis and wounding 20 - raising initial claims by Afghan officials that it was a suicide bombing by Saddam loyalists. But U.S. officials later said the blast was an accident, not an attack.

Afghan officials raised the initial claims of a suicide bombing...in Baghdad?

Is this a typo or is there some bizarre reality behind it?

Is Winston down at MiniTruth slipping a bit today? Confusing his persons and his unpersons, so to speak?:

3. Just a momentary stutter in the operations of
the state propaganda organs. Pay no attention and
continue with your assigned activities.

5. "others got away, apparently tipped off about the raid"
Those new Iraqi police and soldiers will prove to be invaluable to the resistance.

6. sad
:cry: :cry::cry:

--sounds like this is the special force that was trained in Israel by Israeli terrorist fighters. Just plain sad for these people who had and have nothing to do with anything re Saddam. Just sad that we are there on false pretenses and killed so many of them, not only now in this sham of a pretend war, but over the period of ten years of brutal sanctions and the people saw fit to fight back to try to salvage their homeland. Just sad that now we are behaving like heartless, vengeful Neanderthals, with an army that is trained to be barbaric killers of innocent people, knock down their houses--invade and terrorize the women and children in them.

Just think of all the money to be made in rebuilding those houses when they get rebuilt -- who would do that?--does Halliburton have a subsidiary that is into the house building business?

7. When they kick down my door, and make my wife and children scream -
in terror, I will pick up a gun too.

Why not airdrop a few C-130's full of rice and wheat, and see if their attitude improves.

9. Yeah, this'll work. Military genius in action.
A great recruiting tool for the anti-American resisitence. If these people hadn't taken sides before I'm sure that they have now.

10. Why doesn't the US just kill the Iraqi men, and their sons?
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 02:53 PM by SodoffBush
indiscriminantly.

Or is that already SOP?

14. How long before the indict to kill
all the Iraqi first born sons. Or how about jailing all men under 25 -- there's no jobs for them anyway and in jail they won't be able to join the resistance. Plus, as a bonus as prisoners they can be made to work for free.

Free Iraq! Free Palestine! End the Occupations!

12. This of course, is a sign of utter desperation among the
military planners.

This will never work. They are now operating on the assumption that they are going to have to root out a few thousand "loyalists", which is the mantra from the White House.

The reality is that Iraqis, like the citizens of any other country, don't like being occupied (particularly when they are treated this way) and will fight back to regain their country from the infidel hordes who invaded it.

Israel's lessons.....hmmmm.....the lesson of Israel is that this type of repression simply breeds further contempt and violence.

13. They always seem to learn the wrong lessons
They learned the wrong lessons from Israel's experience, and the learned the wrong lesson from Vietnam. They seem to have decided that the lesson from Vietnam was 'don't let the news media tell any truth.'

15. Anyone else find this funny?
“Locksmiths will make a lot of money these days,” said a U.S. soldier, laughing as he sat atop a Bradley fighting vehicle in the city’s industrial zone, where doors were shattered.
