Hussein Document Exposes Network
BAGHDAD, Dec. 16 -- A document discovered during the capture of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has enabled U.S. military authorities to assemble detailed knowledge of a key network behind as many as 14 clandestine insurgent cells, a senior U.S. military officer said Tuesday.

"I think this network that sits over the cells was clearly responsible for financing of the cells, and we think we're into that network," said Army Brig. Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, commander of the 1st Armored Division.

Acting quickly after realizing the significance of the document, which Dempsey likened to minutes of a meeting, troops of the 1st Armored Division conducted raids Sunday and Monday that netted three former Iraqi generals suspected of financing and guiding insurgent operations in the Baghdad area.

Dempsey declined to name the three officers who were detained. He said none was on the Pentagon's list of the 55 most wanted Iraqis but said their family names were familiar to U.S. authorities, suggesting that relatives of the men had come under suspicion.

Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 01:03 PM by tlcandie
So, hiding in hidey hold he keeps these papers.. because? Oh, because when/if he gets caught the US can see everything about this network, WMDs, etc., right? :eyes:

EDIT: Why don't they just get it over with...round em all up... slaughter the men and boys and move on? One big event is much easier to take than this daily dribble of murder, corruption, lies, dishonor, etc. I mean that IS what they are really after, no? Killing all the brown males that MIGHT cause them any problems while they steal their resources and build bases to occupy this region.

7. (playing cynic) They can claim anyone is linked to insurgents
There is zero international oversight so they can claim that documents found lead them to point A and point B and surely these people were involved.

I was thinking this as I read it. There was no mention (that I caught) of these documents or the magic briefcase throughout the day Sunday. Suddenly they know everything. Saddam wasn't in control but he took exact notes and kept them near him. It could be true but something about it doesn't smell right.

10. A king without a throne
still playing at being king. Maybe just a feint attempt to keep up his self-image.

2. Acting quickly after realizing the significance of the document
How many times have I seen this line in pulp fiction novels.

How about this-Acting quickly after realizing the
significance of the ProSaddam riots,Tanks rolled
out on to the streets of Tikrit on Tuesday, as a
message that the U.S. army would not tolerate
shows of support for Saddam Hussein in the captured president's home town.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LAD658282.htm

This time, they really have Saddam, but didn't want
to haul him in front of the world media, flanked by
two burly US Marines, blinking in the torrent of flashbulbs,
for the photo op of the millennium... because they didn't
want to hurt his feelings.

. . . that perfectly preserved Iraqi passport laying poised on the top of that pile of ash . . .

Documents do have a way of popping up in the most unlikely of places. :eyes:

6. hm
So, three Iraqi Generals who we weren't interested in before. Why not? Probably because they cooperated with the "Coalition" before, during, and/or after the invasion.

Now we find a document in "saddam's" possession that tags these three as resistance leaders? And thats coorberated because the families of these guys had already come under suspicion?

At the risk of sounding crass, these folks are dropping dimes on eachother like theres no tomorrow. Old scores are being settled, and US soldiers are the instruments used. Which in turn means that every time we nail somebody on a false tip, we add at least one more household of Iraqi citizens with direct negative interactions with the occupying forces.

this whole thing stinks so bad from top to bottom that I'm losing my sense of smell. Maybe thats the idea.

8. Smells,stinks so bad-recurring theme today
The sheer weight of the media barrage indicates
an element of resistance.
The voices become shriller and shriller as they
fail to find the desired audience reaction. The
propaganda campaign has failed to break down
resentment and suspicion in the US. Popular
skepticism is proving “a tough nut to crack.”

Wide layers of the American population intuitively
“smell” something corrupt and dirty about the Iraq
war; they sense that this is a conflict about oil and
big money, launched by and for Bush and his friends
in corporate America.

:wow: Ahhh k Things just get loonier and loonier! I think I may have to bolt my head on after the first of the year because this is just madness!

Lenn from Britain who use to be in the parliment there (correct me if wrong) was on Democracy NOW! yesterday and spoke about the fact that all morals/integrity have disappeared in government/politics and we are now in an era of pure greed and power and all rules by which we formerly operated are gone. (Totally paraphrased here)

EDIT: Interesting somehow this got into this thread.. sorry! Mistake

13. I heard a report there were some 500 pages worth of memos, notes, etc.?
seems like a lot to "carry around". Saddam was obsessed with security. It's hard to reconcile that well known fact with his having "telling" written info with him.

14. That's what happened in Afghanastan
Our troops relied on information from rival warlords to identify Taliban, and instead became unpaid mercenaries taking out their enemies.
