Pelosi leads way in debate over Iraq war
WASHINGTON - Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) led the way Tuesday as the Democratic-controlled House embarked on an extraordinary debate over the Iraq war, declaring that the public has decided that President Bush's policies "have not worked, will not work and must be changed."

A vote is expected by Friday on a nonbinding measure that opposes Bush's recent decision to increase the number of U.S. military personnel in Iraq while pledging support for the troops already there.

"Instead of engaging in personal and partisan attacks over the next three days, we must focus on this question: How is the violence in Iraq most likely to be lessened so that our troops can come home safely and soon?" Pelosi, D-Calif., said in excerpts of her remarks released by her office.

"The president's plan is based on a judgment that the way out of Iraq lies in sending more troops in. History has proven just the opposite. Four previous troop escalations have resulted primarily in escalating levels of violence," she said.

1. A nonbinding resolution
means nothing. And the surge troops started leaving the night the asshole gave his surge speech. I heard on AAR yesterday that they are being sent without body armor and tanks that aren't protected as well as they can be from IEDs.

This commander in chief is a monster!!

Forget about non binding resolutions people. Tell your congress critters to bring the troops home TODAY!!

And if dipshit won't end the war, IMPEACH him.

That's what you need to tell your congress critters.

2. you have to read this: Funding for VA slashed in 2009
WASHINGTON -- Iraq War veteran Christopher Carbone said he wouldn't mind a decrease in his medical benefits if it meant that additional federal dollars would be used for armored Humvees on the battlefield.

But Carbone, a survivor of an improvised explosive device attack in Iraq in October 2005, couldn't help being a little jarred when he learned the Bush administration planned to cut funding for veterans' health care by 2 percent in 2009 in order to balance the federal budget by 2012.

"It's kind of surprising," Carbone, 28, of North Haledon, said Monday. "It's one of those things that you always expect to be taken care of after everything you do."

After a moment of consideration, Carbone resorted to a soldier's resolve.

"One thing I learned in the Army, in the lower ranks you never really grasp the whole picture," said Carbone, a first lieutenant in the Army National Guard.

8. I think what poor Lt. Carbone means is, shit runs downhill.
This is such a story of shame. I am so ashamed of how this country is treating its returning vets. Support the troops indeed.

3. Is it just me? "Pelosi LED the way Tuesday" - it's not even 7:30 AM on Tuesday now
So is the writer psychic? Or have they a time travel machine?

:eyes:

Sorry to be carping, it's just I find it offensive when news is written "in advance" like this..... Had they got the TENSE right "Speaker Pelosi WILL LEAD" it would have been a different thing entirely......

5. Yes I wondered about that too
but you know what I hate worse? When TV news uses the present tense. "A man murders his wife" "Fire rages through apartment building"

I stopped watching local news when they started that crap.
