Caracas, Wednesday February 07 , 2007
Washington names Patrick Duddy as new Ambassador to Venezuela

The United States Under Secretary of State for Brazil, the South Cone and the Caribbean Patrick Duddy was appointed as the new US Ambassador to Venezuela.

The move was made months ago, among other things to take advantage of current US Ambassador to Venezuela William Brownfield's potential in Colombia, a country with which Washington has more dynamic bilateral ties, diplomatic sources said, adding that no date has been set to implement such changes.

Duddy, married and a father of two, has been a consul in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He worked as the chief of a peace mission in La Paz, Bolivia, and has occupied diplomatic positions in Chile, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Panama ...

1. I don't expect any improvement
In relations or less meddling by us. Granted this feeling is 'at first blush' , but call me cynical. Bush has the Midas touch in reverse, and common sense is not what he has going for him.

2. He's really going to have to hustle to do a more impressive job than his predecessor,

William Brownfield! That guy wowed them all so much at a Little League baseball game where he suddenly showed up, that men and women streaked to their motorcycles, grabbing fruits, tomatoes, eggs, vegetables from a local produce market as they ran, and chased him the heck outta there.

The event was memorialized by someone who took took film of it out of the window of his limosine.

Brownfield

Winner Brownfield had recently replaced Ambassador Charles Shapiro, who allowed no time to pass after the kidnapping of Hugo Chavez before he was at the Presidential Palace, throwing his spindly arms around the coup President, Pedro Carmona. What a shame for him he had jumped the gun when the people who had elected Hugo Chavez demanded that he be returned to office.

Charles Shapiro, later entertaining a group of anti-Chavez opposition Venezuelans, brought forth a comedian in drag who proceeded to entertain them all with a puppet show, which mocked Hugo Chavez. Charles Shapiro did this officially as the US taxpayer-supported ambassador to Venezuela, which had just retrieved its President from a coup which was UNSUPPORTED by the people.

Shapiro

The new guy, Patrick Duddy.
