New Israeli weapons system may revolutionise urban warfare
http://jang.com.pk/thenews/dec2003-daily/16-12-2003/world/w12.htm

TEL AVIV: A new weapons system was unveiled on Monday in Israel which enables armed forces to fire guns around corners and could revolutionise urban warfare around the world.

The patented "Corner Shot" provides protection to the soldier by enabling him to shoot down a street, through a window or a doorframe with maximum accuracy while keeping out of the line of fire. The system consists of a rod and a mobile end section, which can be adjusted with any type of combat handgun and includes a camera allowing the soldier to scan the targeted area and aim while maintaining cover.

Russian soldiers during the bloody World War II siege of Stalingrad first had the idea of bending the barrels of their rifles to shoot around corners and their Nazi opponents developed a purpose-built attachment fitted with a periscope, which they called the krummerlauf.

The Israeli-US developed Corner Shot is the latest improvement on a series of devices invented over the past two decades by the FBI and the French army which left at least the combatant’s hand exposed. "This system was put on the market three months ago and we have already sold it to 15 countries," said Amos Golan, a retired lieutenant colonel who served in Israeli anti-terror units and invented the Corner Shot. The device costs between three and five thousand dollars and has been sold to the US, Russian and several European armies, said Golan, also joint CEO of Corner Shot holdings.

Israeli troops kill unarmed Palestinians

Israeli forces shot and killed two unarmed Palestinians early yesterday and were hunting for three others in southern Israel after the group approached the fence that separates between Israel and the Gaza Strip, the army said.

The area along the border fence is off-limits to Palestinians, the army said.

6. Doesn't help if you don't know where to point it
either. They already have look over the wall thingys etc.
And the point about RPG's etc. below is well taken. My guess
is that, at best, you have an incremental improvement, and
at worst it won't be worth the trouble.

5. Urban fighting revolution my arse
A well placed RPG in the corner of that building where the guy lays and I would bet $100 he will not survive under the crumbling wall.
But this is a useful device when you are shooting at the target which have no means to answer like rock-throwing kids in Palestine.

24. Seems easily avoidable
How does it readjust its corner and how long does that take? Seems to me that, if you just change your corner in respect to the shooter often and fast enough, he/she will have one hell of a time trying to aim that thing, let alone shoot accurately. Or am I wrong?

8. A useful tool against urban(short range) snipers...

...but nothing more. Revolutionise urban warfare? I rather doubt it. That thing looks ackward to set up and use. It would be practically useless in a real fire fight. Especially at night. That monitor will stand out like a lit cigarette.

12. There's a lot of misinformation out there.
The German version was for the MP-43/44/Stg44/45 series of weapons. These fired an intermediate rifle cartridge, not a pistol round. It was not issued to tank crews, who were issued handguns and MP-40s. It also didn't have a bent barrel. It was an adapter and sighting mechanism which attached to the end of a straight barrel, altering the trajectory of the projectile after it left the barrel. There were two main problems with this: First, it quickly wore away the portion of the device that redirected the projectile. Secondly, it deformed the projectile, causing erratic flight paths.

FYI: This wasn't strictly a Nazi thing. The Brits had a system with a similar concept in WWI for trench warfare. Instead of having a curved barrel, however, it was a periscope and secondary stock device which allowed a standard SMLE #3 to be fired over a trench parapet without the shooter exposing themselves. During WWII, the Americans also had a curved barrel for use with the M3A1 "greasegun".

If you want to get technical, this new system has more in common with the WWI British system than the WWII German system.

17. MonkeyScope!!!
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 02:44 PM by mad_as_hell
I had one as a kid. It was so much fun! It was painted in camouflage and you could use it to spy around corners. All they had to do was add the gun.

Why did it take 35 years???

on edit...There was also the Monkey Gun. Also a fun toy. I've become much less military since then.

21. a 17 shot handgun....
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 04:28 PM by DoNotRefill
hardly qualifies as a WMD.

The thing being sold uses standard handguns. The company manufacturing the device doesn't even produce the firearm, they make the sighting system, and incoroporate an existing handgun into it.

BTW, how exactly would this be any more lethal than a regular handgun which is easily available on the black market already? After all, you can take a regular handgun and a mirror, stick your hand around the corner, and pull the trigger, which is what this system does.

28. Actually, come to think of it, the NEW Israeli weapon system
that is guaranteed to revolutionise is Amerika (intentional)! It is nothing new for a lot of folks just now it is out in the open for all to see that US/Israel are indistinguishable in their policies towards the ME.

In Iraq, they are now jointly a NEW Israeli weapon system!!! Iraqis welcome to Palestine liberation Israeli style!

And no I'm not anti-semite anything. People are who they are... if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck then it is a duck.. QUACK!

29. Wouldn't Israel want to keep this new "revolutionized urban warfare"
weapon a big secret? So I guess we'll factor in the 'fear' factor, 'eh?

I don't see anything revolutionizing about this weapon what-so-ever.

30. Think of the savings
Instead of using bulldozers to eliminate freedom fighters that can now use a five cent bullet from behind a wall to reduce the population of the oppposition. Why do they need more weapons to kill innocents?

31. bulldozers are for destroying homes, anyway
Israeli occupying forces destroy 22 Palestinian houses in Khan Yunis, leaving approximately 200 civilians homeless

This morning, in the latest attack against Palestinian civilians and property, Israeli occupying forces destroyed 22 houses in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip. Contrary to Israeli claims that the houses were uninhabited, preliminary investigations conducted by PCHR revealed that the Israeli military operation left 178 Palestinian civilians ( 25families) homeless. In addition, homes belonging to 6 families (approximately 40 civilians) have become uninhabitable.

According to PCHR’s investigations, at approximately00 : 30on Monday, 15 December2003 , Israeli occupying forces, reinforced by heavy military vehicles and helicopters and covered by intense shelling, moved into Khan Yunis refugee camp. During the operation, Israeli forces totally demolished 18 houses and 4 others partially, leaving 178 civilians ( 25families) homeless.
