Republicans try to block Iraq resolution
Republicans try to block Iraq resolution
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats launched a withering attack Monday on President Bush's decision to deploy more troops to Iraq and accused Republicans of attempting to block a full-fledged debate on the war.

"We welcome the debate and are happy to have it," countered Sen. Mitch McConnell (news, bio, voting record) of Kentucky, the Republican leader, but he said the GOP rank-and-file stood ready to delay action to protest Democratic tactics.

A test vote was likely late in the day, and Republicans appeared to have enough strength to prevail.

The political jockeying unfolded as Democrats sought passage of a nonbinding measure, supported by Sen. John Warner (news, bio, voting record), R-Va., that is critical of the administration's new Iraq policy. It is the first time Democrats scheduled a sustained debate on the war since they won control over Congress in last fall's midterm elections.

1. Is this a trap for the Republicans?
I thought that this was just a lame bill and that Reid was being lame along with it, but now I'm not sure.

3. Yes, but they don't want it on record.
It's non-binding, and there is no reason to vote against it.
But once you vote against the King, it gets logged and he'll
come after you.

So they are trying to keep the vote from happening.

4. John Warners office will get an earful from me tomorrow.
I had actually called and thanked him for his resolution.

Hopefully many many others will also call and read them the riot act.

I get so sick of the lying scumbags.

5. I don't think it was Warner's fault....

The way I understand it the other Republicans blocking it.....it needed 60 votes to pass and was 11 short.

I take it back..I misspoke..I am wrong...it sounds like Warner did vote against his own proposal....who would have thunk it....so sorry...

edited for grammer and because I was wrong....
