US troop surge in Iraq will not bring peace: Italy
TOKYO (AFP) - Italy's foreign minister has questioned whether US President George W. Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq would bring peace, calling instead for the Iraqi military to be developed.

"Looking at the number of deaths since the start of the war until today, I don't think sending more foreign troops will increase peace as such," Massimo D'Alema said on a visit to Tokyo Friday.

"In order to escape the current situation of civil war in Iraq, it is necessary to ... firmly establish a diverse and fair security force," he said.

Italy's centre-left Prime Minister Romano Prodi has withdrawn troops sent by his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi, a key Bush ally.

1. It is not designed to bring peace
It is designed to bring more war.

2. Exactly right,
adding more troops to Iraq will help bring peace the same way adding more fuel to a fire will help put it out. It won't.

3. Another way of putting it:
Fighting war to bring peace is like having sex to promote virginity. The sentiment is particularly applicable right now in Iraq. The neocons have a deliberate intention that we will never extract all of our troops from Iraq. But if we don't do that soon, we're going to be in a war with Iran and who knows what other countries. That's something the neocons want too and they're doing their best to provoke Iran into a confrontation.
