Nelson, Hagel back new Iraq resolution
BY JAKE THOMPSON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU
WASHINGTON - Both of Nebraska's senators embraced a new compromise resolution disapproving of President Bush's troop expansion in Iraq.
The compromise, which emerged Wednesday evening, could draw more bipartisan support if the full Senate considers it, as expected, on Monday.
Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat who co-sponsored an earlier resolution, said the new measure is "strongly worded, expresses the Senate's disagreement with the president's surge plan and holds the Iraqi government accountable for its responsibilities."
Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican who had co-sponsored a competing resolution, said today that he expects the Senate will send Bush a message against adding 21,500 new U.S. troops to Iraq.
