Violence in Guinea capital
0/01/2007 21:52 - (SA)

Conakry - Three people were shot dead in Guinea's second largest city, Nzerekore, on Saturday when security forces dispersed a demonstration of several thousand protesters on the 11th day of a general strike, a hospital official said.

"We have recorded three dead and six wounded, one of whom is in a coma," the source told AFP.

"The dead were all hit by bullets, in the chest, abdomen and head respectively," said the source, who was contacted by telephone from the capital, Conakry.

The deaths brought to eight the number killed in clashes in Guinea since trade unions launched the strike against President Lansana Conte on January 10.
