12. another link: Mystery gas-like smell wafts over NYC
mysterious gas-like odor wafted over Manhattan from Union Square to the Upper West Side Monday, leaving emergency workers scrambling to determine a cause.

Reports of the smell began around 9 a.m. from as far south as Chelsea and east to Union Square and all the way through the West 80s on the Upper West Side.

The smell was reportedly particularly strong in the Herald Square area.

Investigators at the Office of Emergency Management said they were aware of the smell and were working to determine a cause.

"We have numerous calls and reports about a gas leak from midtown to downtown, river-to-river but we don't have any locations or any injuries reported," an OEM spokesman said.

He said there was no immediate threat to public safety.

40. 'No immediate threat to public safety"
A gas leak covering midtown to downtown, river-to-river, and there is no 'immediate' threat?

It's called a fuel-air explosive. The military uses it a lot.

Perhaps a more-to-scale visual aid would be in order.

17. It happens all the time
usually just in a small area, though. Anywhere where you have gas this is common.

It's uncommon, however, to waft over such a large area.

25. Isn't nat. gas oderless? Isn't an odor added to it to make leaks detectable
with your nose? Or is that an urban myth?

31. yes - they put the odor in because natural gas has very little odor
It may not be natural gas -- could be just the additive. And I have smelled mosquito spray that smells similar to the additive.

I'm at 86th/bwy and I don't smell anything but rain.

in other words, it's undoubtedly just a leak somewhere. if this were like Chicago and the chocolate odor you sometimes would smell downtown, i'm sure nobody would be complaining. :D

24. Mayor's spokesperson said officials told her Chelsea...link
The Fire Department began getting calls about the odor around 9 a.m. Monday, said spokesman Tim Hinchey. No source had been identified.

Across the Hudson River, Jersey City, N.J., mayor's spokeswoman Maria Pignataro said officials there were told the odor was due to a gas leak in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, just north of Greenwich Village.

21. Could this be related to the Maple syrup odor that was reported
in NYC last fall? Maybe there were always strange odors in the city but they were ignored until the fear of a terrorist attack put everyone on edge.
