Baghdad Initiative to Go Door to Door

Iraqi forces backed by U.S. troops will begin a neighborhood-by-neighborhood assault on militants in the capital this weekend as a first step in the new White House strategy to contain Sunni insurgents and Shiite death squads, key advisers to the prime minister said Friday.

The first details of the plan - a fresh bid to pacify the capital - emerged a day after President Bush and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spoke for nearly two hours by video conference. Both leaders were expected to detail their vision of a new strategy in the coming days.

...

The Iraqis did, however, signal continuing disagreement on key issues, including al-Maliki's unease over the introduction of more U.S. troops.

...

Sami al-Askari, an al-Maliki political adviser, told The Associated Press on Friday that al-Maliki had not acquiesced to the reported White House plan to send as many as 9,000 more U.S. troops to Baghdad alone.

"President Bush told the prime minister he was ready to send additional troops, but al-Maliki said he would have to talk that over with his senior military officers to see if they were needed," al-Askari said.

4. This sounds like the Jehovah Witness approach to warfare.
First bomb the crap out of their country, then go door to door? Hello, I'm with the US military. I'd like to ask a few questions. Have you ever used a IED? Do you own a AK-47? Can I interest you in this horrible literature that shows Jesus feeding a fish to large crowd of hungry people with robes and beards?

What are they trying to do? Capture the coutry by boredom? Maybe it's the foot in the door approach. We won't leave until you commit your life to Christ.

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iraq PM says to launch major new Baghdad crackdown
06 Jan 2007 10:28:11 GMT
Source: Reuters

BAGHDAD, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday
his security forces, backed by Americans, were about to implement a major
new crackdown on illegal armed groups from all sectarian factions in Baghdad.

Maliki said in a speech at a parade marking Army Day that the plan would be
implemented in spite of any criticism from political factions: "The security plan
is ready."

Military commanders in each neighbourhood of the capital, where a U.S.-backed
security plan was first launched five months ago, would have full powers to
implement the plan as they saw fit in their own areas.

"After a review of the previous plans, we will depend on our armed forces to
implement this plan and the Multinational Force will support our forces," Maliki
said. "They will intervene whenever they are called on."

15. Iraqis to lead assault to take back Baghdad

Iraqis to lead assault to take back Baghdad

POSTED: 10:17 a.m. EST, January 6, 2007

Story Highlights
• Effort to be aided by U.S.; "outlaws" to be routed regardless of sect
• Prime minister: Hussein execution followed fair trial, was not political
• Baghdad Emergency Police chief survives car bomb attack

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday that Iraq's armed forces are set for an assault on Baghdad to take out militias and rogue security forces.

Aided by multinational troops, the Iraqi forces "will hunt down all outlaws regardless of their sectarian and political affiliations," al-Maliki said at an Iraqi Army Day parade.

"We will also severely punish those who do not carry out orders or operate in a partisan or sectarian way," he said.

Forces will search out insurgents neighborhood-by-neighborhood, The Associated Press reported, and will start the assault this weekend.

The announcement came two days after al-Maliki and President Bush spoke by video conference for two hours. .......

that is to disappear -- and reappear later, somewhere else, or morphed into something else?

This is clearly, indisputably, civil war. Neighbor against neighbor, family against family, brother against brother.

American backed Iraqi troops fighting the Iraqi population.

24. Iraqi Armed Forces and Iraqi Militias: mostly overlapping set.
So the militia infiltrated Iraqi government that couldn't even keep the militias out of the botched lynching of Saddam Hussein is going to use its militia infiltrated armed forces to eliminate the militias. OK. Sounds like a plan.

28. Obviously, an agreement has been made with Bush. My best guess...
Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 01:00 PM by Clarkie1
Bush probably assured Maliki an increase in U.S. troops to help him "take out militias and rogue security forces." (but that's just a guess, Maliki could have gotten other commitments as well, perhaps economic, etc.). Maliki's part of the deal was to announce this today. I wonder what Bush agreeded to get Maliki to do this, and if the agreement is contigent upon Maliki actually following through on this. And I wonder if he can...how much control does Maliki actually have over the actions of the security forces?

Maliki's recent statements that he doesn't want to be the leader of Iraq are disconcerting if we are making deals with the guy.

44. Just in case there's any Baghdad family who hasn't had their door kicked in yet
by troops over the past 4 years. This should be an excellent way of uniting the Iraqi population - piss them all off. This time, they'll all hate the Iraqi government and troops, as well as the US ones. Brilliant.
