Nifong sworn in for another term

By: Associated Press

... Reporters weren't allowed to see the 8 a.m. ceremony for Nifong and his staff, and were barred from the building until shortly before it opened to the public a half-hour later.

Nifong said he scheduled the ceremony early so it wouldn't interfere with the work day.

"The whole point of this was this was not a media event," Nifong said. "This was an event that was required of us so we could get back to work and do our jobs. The message we tried to send was this: This is 2007. We're here to do our jobs. We're not here to basically help you guys sell newspapers or press coverage" ...

2. Nifong is the DA involved in the Duke Lacrosse rape case
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1123262/

<snip>
"He's probably under more pressure now than ever before," North Carolina Central University law professor Irving Joyner said. "You have three of the best defense attorneys in the state shooting after him, and you have the state bar that's filed a complaint about his conduct."

An N.C. Central student told police she was beaten and raped by three Duke lacrosse players while performing as a stripper at a March 13 team party. Juniors Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty and 2006 graduate David Evans face kidnapping and sexual offense charges.

<snip>
Nifong last month dismissed rape charges against the three players, saying the woman's uncertainty about the alleged attack meant he couldn't prove meet the state standard to prove rape.

Last week, the State Bar filed a complaint against Nifong, saying his statements to the media early in the investigation constituted fraud, deceit or dishonesty.

5. Nifong wishes it would drop off the news cycle
There is no telling how many innocents Nifong has railroaded into ill conceived plea bargains or tainted trials. North Carolina will have a burgeoning market in public defenderss taking up the causes of people formerly prosecuted (and persecuted) by Nifong. They ought to get together and file a class action lawsuit, if such a thing were possible!

4. ... Norm Early, a former district attorney in Denver who now works with the ..
.. National District Attorneys Association, said the defense has been equally reckless.

“I think it's outrageous,” Early said. “I think it's an escalation of the defense's attempts to get Mr. Nifong to drop the case or get him thrown off the case. I think it's extremely unfortunate that they are looking at his statements, and not the defense counsel, who have made many comments that were misleading and inaccurate” ...
