Bush: Execution Will Not Halt Violence

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) -- President Bush said Friday that Saddam Hussein's execution marks the "end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops" and cautioned that his death will not halt the violence in Iraq.

Yet, Bush said in a statement issued from his ranch in Texas, "it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain and defend itself, and be an ally in the war on terror."

In a message of assurance to the people of Iraq, Bush said the execution was a reminder of how far the Iraqi people have come since the end of Saddam's rule.

"The progress they have made would not have been possible without the continued service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform," he said.

Just how far have the Iraqi people come since the end of Saddam's rule? The iraqis have experinced nothing but death and destruction since the end of Saddam's rule; that's just how far they have come. The execution of Saddam will have done nothing to heal the nation of Iraq.
Bush is sadly mistaken if he believes Saddam's execution will justify the US deadly assault against the people of Iraq. Somewhere in the dim rcesses of this man's brain he truly believes Saddam's death is a 'milestone' in the democratization of Iraq. Death is nothing to celebrte whether it is the death of US martyred soldiers, wanton killing of Iraqi citizens or even the death of despots.
For Bush to consider himself a hero for bringing some sort of 'freedom' and a possibity of some sort of a democracy by widespread death and destruction to the Iraqis is the skewed belief of an unhinged mind.

Saddam's summary trial and execution was a grave injustice in that it was the final coverup and stonewalling of America's complicity in his crimes. As Robert Fisk wrote in a biting column:

Who encouraged Saddam to invade Iran in 1980, which was the greatest war crime he has committed for it led to the deaths of a million and a half souls? And who sold him the components for the chemical weapons with which he drenched Iran and the Kurds? We did. No wonder the Americans, who controlled Saddam's weird trial, forbad any mention of this, his most obscene atrocity, in the charges against him. Could he not have been handed over to the Iranians for sentencing for this massive war crime? Of course not. Because that would also expose our culpability.
