Peru: Key witness reaffirms Toledo's participation in signature scandal

(LIP-jl) -- Carmen Burga, the key witness in the case against former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo, reaffirmed Toledo's participation in the scandal.

According to Burga, Toledo actively participated in falsifying signatures needed to register his political party with Peru's National Jury of Elections prior to the elections held in 2000.

"Everything has been said and proven by the justice system and Toledo is certainly implicated in the forging allegations," affirmed Burga during an interview with Peru's RPP Radio.

Burga expressed her willingness to cooperate with authorities in the event she is called to retestify.

However, she also mentioned she fears for her safety as well as for her family's security.

Peru- In spite of charges, Toledo won't return until February

(LIP-jl) -- Former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo, who has recently had his case for his alleged role in falsifying signatures reopened by the judiciary, will not return to Peru until February.

The announcement was made by former Peruvian legislator Marcial Ayaipoma, who at the same time criticized Peruvian judge Carolina Lizarraga for opening the case against the former Peruvian head of state.

"Toledo himself has manifested that he will make short visits to Peru every 2-3 months because his academic obligations in the United States do not permit him to stay longer," declared Ayaipoma.

Ayaipoma questioned Lizarraga's decision and stated, "this is an extreme and abusive decision. She has barred Toledo from leaving the country (when he returns to Peru) and placed an embargo on his possessions. She is treating President Toledo like a common criminal."
