LAFAYETTE, Calif. - A contentious war memorial was vandalized overnight Tuesday with paint that covered a running count of U.S. troops killed in Iraq.

Cars slowed past the hillside war memorial Wednesday as motorists turned to gawk at the blackened tribute that had read "In Memory of 2,867 Troops Killed in Iraq" on a hillside dotted with more than 500 white crosses.

Police Chief Mike Fisher said it appears a paint roller was used on the sign sometime before 8 a.m. Wednesday, when the vandalism was first reported by a passing cab driver. There are no suspects.

Lafayette residents Johnson and Louise Clark own the hillside, and the memorial was spearheaded by resident Jeff Heaton. Neither made a complaint last month when an enraged former Marine was photographed kicking the sign apart, Fisher said.

Meanwhile, city hall continues to focus on whether the memorial is legal under Lafayette's sign ordinance. The city attorney is studying the issue and will report back to the city council at a date that hasn't been determined, City Manager Steve Falk said.
