Mexican Soldiers Find Hybrid Pot Plants
LAZARO CARDENAS, Mexico (AP) - Thousands of soldiers sent to seize control of one of Mexico's top drug-producing regions have discovered widespread cultivation of a hybrid marijuana plant that is easy to grow and difficult to kill, officials said Tuesday.

The plants can only be killed by having their roots pulled, a slow and tedious task, Army Gen. Manuel Garcia told The Associated Press, one of four media outlets allowed to accompany soldiers on the daylong raid.

"Before we could cut the plant and destroy it, but this plant will come back to life unless it's taken out by the roots," Garcia said.

The hybrid first appeared in Mexico two years ago but has become the plant of choice for drug traffickers in western Michoacan state, a remote mountainous region that lends to itself to drug production.

The plants resist chemicals that only burn the top leaves without hurting the root, making aerial fumigation impossible, Garcia said.

On Tuesday, dozens of soldiers wielding assault rifles swarmed 38 marijuana plantations, ripping plants out of the ground. As they flew back to their base, they spotted 32 new fields.

11. Actually NOT! Hybrid plant seeds make for lousy planting...
If they do germinate, the plant is most often inferior to the plant that produced it.

Sounds like someone is trying to muckup the heirloom strains.

Now don't get my wrong, hybrids can produced excellent results...if you don't want to 'save your seeds' and have a trusted source for the hybrids.

Of course...'you didn't hear this from me'~

24. a few things...
almost all pot being grown is a hybrid of some sort.

most people don't grow from seed, they get some seeds, grow them, pick the best plant to be a clone mother and grow clones.

it sounds like they essentially made marijuana, an annual, into a perennial, if it grows from the roots so well after being cut down or chemically burned, it should regenerate very easily as well in a controlled growing environment.

the big question is, was this hybrid made the old fashioned way, or genetically engineered? if its GMO pot, no thanks.

15. Cranberry extract does prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder lining.
I think an experiment is in order. My hypothesis is that consuming large amounts of cranberry extract prior to smoking pot will decrease the ability of the THC molecule to bind with the bladder lining and will, thus, manifest itself as a shortened period of time to reduce the levels of THC in the urine to undetectable levels. A second group who smokes pot and then drinks cranberry juice should show some but less of of the same effect if I am correct and a third randomized group that smokes equivalent amounts of pot but drinks no cranberry extract will serve as the control group. Any volunteers?

I really can't risk a hot piss test right now.

After I'm working again, I'd love to be a part of any trials you might put together. Especially if it includes your supplying the green.

You can't tell me all those university labs don't have a budding rogue grad assistant or two. But how would they get published?

I propose a "Manhattan Project" on alternate energy, and a smaller one on drugs.. let's test some naturally occurring drugs and pharma drugs and get a better picture of what happens in our bodies.

27. We'lll Be Cursing This Stuff As A Weed From Now On
I find this article fascinating as well as indicative of how stupid and futile is the US-backed war on marijuana. Some very sharp minds put a lot of effort into developing that strain of cannabis sativa.

Unfortunately, this hybrid plant is likely to prove to be a weed in the conventional sense as well as in slang. Gardeners, farmers, and ladnscapers are likely to be trying to eradicate it for decades to come and this strain will inevitably spread and crowd out native plants in the Americas.

36. Genetics rule! - Coca plants are now resistant to RoundUp
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 10:42 AM by Ezlivin
There is a fascinating article about the appearance of coca plants that are not killed by the defoliant RoundUp™

Our government has been engaged in a very expensive and failed attempt at eradicating indigenous coca plants from Columbia (see below) and other South American countries. They have hired pilots to repeatedly overfly suspected coca fields and spray Monsanto's RoundUp (also known as Agent Orange). Evolution eventually ensured that some coca plants would survive. Enterprising coca growers saved these plants, took cuttings and passed them along. Pretty soon whole fields of RoundUp Ready® coca plants were growing. (Monsanto also has been involved with developing plants that are resistant to RoundUp so that they can simply spray entire crops with the weed killer and leave behind only plants that are, as they say, RoundUp Ready®.)

Authorized by Congress in 2000 and given $1.6 billion, the Columbia Plan was to reduce the cultivation, processing and distribution of narcotics by 5O% over the next six years. This reduction would be achieved primarily through military means since more than 80% of the funding is for military use.

So what has the “tiny price” gotten us in the last two years? Columbian cocaine production should be reduced by at least 15% or down to “only” 663 tons a year. This should provide some relief; Coca production in Columbia has tripled since 1992. It now produces 90 percent of the cocaine and 65 percent of the heroin consumed in the U.S.

Coca production in Columbia skyrocketed following our intervention efforts in Peru and Bolivia.

As sure as night follows day, any obstacle that a drug warrior encounters can always be overcome through additional taxpayer funding. Drug war succeeding? The government needs more taxpayer money. Drug war failing? The government needs more taxpayer money.

39. Jokes aside, this could be a boom for biofuels production
They've essentially found a perennial variety of marijuana, which is normally an annual. If they could either duplicate this in hemp, or simply cross-breed this perennial marijuana with hemp until it has too low of a THC concentration to be a problem, you could have the perfect biofuel crop. It would be fast-growing, tolerant of poor, dry soils, no insect or weed problems, and could be harvested year after year without the need to replant your fields. Simply cut a crop, apply a light fertilizer or manure mulch, and in a few more months you'll have another crop ready to harvest.
