Quebec party seeks to topple Canada's Conservatives
Report: Quebec party seeks to topple Canada's Conservatives

OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canada's opposition Bloc Quebecois aims to topple the minority Conservative government February 15, the La Presse newspaper said Thursday.

It said the Bloc, which seeks independence for the French-speaking province of Quebec, would introduce a no-confidence motion in Parliament over the government's handling of its mission in Afghanistan, where more than 40 Canadian troops have died so far.

Recent opinion polls show that if the Conservatives were defeated, an election probably would bring either be a majority or a minority Liberal government.

The Bloc says Canadian troops, who have been involved in fierce clashes with Taliban militants, should be trying to help rebuild Afghanistan rather than fighting.

The leftist New Democrats want Canada's troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan, while the Liberals have demanded the focus of the mission be switched to reconstruction.

The spokesman for Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe was not immediately available for comment.

1. Hey, NDP apologists on here.
Why the ** isn't THE BLESSED JACK the one planning this no-confidence motion?

Simple. To the NDP, the propsect of building their own party is more important than the lives of Canadians and future of your country. That's why he toppled Paul Martin, and keeps Harper in power.

4. The NDP is propping up the government?
I can't recall any votes where the Bloc and Liberals would have brought down the government if only they'd had the support of the NDP. In the absence of such a vote, one can't really truthfully say that the NDP is propping up the government.

And do you really expect the NDP to vote in support of Harper's Afghanistan policy? Get real.

By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA, Dec 14 (Reuters) - The chances of a quick election in Canada rose
on Thursday when both the main opposition parties said they would not back
the minority Conservative government in crucial votes early next year.

The Conservatives won the Jan. 23 election but only control 124 of the 308
seats in the House of Commons, which makes them particularly vulnerable
if the opposition combines forces.

Many commentators predict Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be defeated over
his next budget, which is expected in February or March. If Parliament rejects
a budget, the government falls and the country goes to the polls.

Stephane Dion, elected the new leader of the Liberals two weeks ago, dismissed
the idea he could back the budget.

"To say to my colleagues, 'I love the budget Mr. Harper is presenting,' is very
unlikely. I think they (the Conservatives) are making big mistakes," he told a
news conference. "My capacity to be in agreement with Mr. Harper is very low."

5. Then be sure to vote Tory (or at least Liberal)
Both of those parties have climate change policies dedicated to the notion that there shouldn't be any frozen ground in the winter.
