Bush Sr. worried China faces trade backlash in U.S.

By Ben Blanchard Thu Dec 14, 12:49 AM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - China needs to do more to address its trade deficit with the United States or risk a backlash from protectionist elements in the newly Democrat-controlled legislature, former President
George Bush said on Thursday.

............

"The huge trade deficit remains a very sensitive issue for the United States and in the long run an issue for the leaders of China," Bush told students at the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
...........

"These kinds of steps are critical if China wants to prevent an erosion of political support in the United States for strong relations with China, and to counter the forces for protectionism in the United States," said Bush.

"My worry is that some of the leaders in the new Congress are anti-free trade; they are more for protectionism," added the former Republican president, who first came to Beijing in 1974 to help pave the way for restoring Sino-U.S. diplomatic ties.

"We're coming into a difficult period in the United States," he added.

1. .....scarcely mentioned human rights in his speech.......

......Bush, father of the current U.S. president and a self-described "old friend" of China, scarcely mentioned human rights in his speech at a Chinese university, praising the Beijing government and saying Sino-U.S. ties would be this century's most important relationship.

14. Those events are China's business, not ours.
China has the right to maintain its own social system without some new McCarthyite cold war threat from the US.

9. Funny how Bush Sr. calls the Dems "anti-free trade" when it's HE who's anti "free trade"
There IS no "free trade" between us and China - or India, or Korea, or etc. Those countries have tariff walls higher than Mt.Everest preventing American goods from being sold competively within their own borders. Meanwhile, China and India are perfectly free to sell their cheaply-made junk to the USA, without any punishing tariffs.

Bush Sr. is either the dumbest person on earth for his statements made in China, or the most cynically disingenuous lying person on earth.

15. Progressives should oppose anti-China aggression.
The neocons would love nothing more than to take China down. Why are so many people here apt to defend Cuba's right to live in peace, but refuse to support the same right for China?

16. Bullshit...
the Chinese government is dangerous.

We should not be doing as much business with China.

All the fucked up things our country did for "freedom" during the cold war, I can easily imagine China doing much worse when it finally becomes a world power. They are already staring to exert influence in Africa and other countries, they scarely care about human rights in thier own nation they really wont care about it elsewhere.

We definately dont need to be funding Chinas rise.

24. I Oppose Anti-China Aggression . . . I Also Oppose 'Free-Trade' In It's Current Incarnation
I support tariffs based on compliance with United States labor, environmental, and workplace safety laws, and comparative wages. I also support tariff penalties for unacceptable human rights violations. I also support waiver of the wage provision of the above for nations that have acquired MFN status under a strengthened law.

17. Why do the Bushes hate the American People?
The constant drone of Dems hating America is bs. But this family - starting with a Nazi supporter - seriously favors the Saudi Royals and human rights abusing China over the American public.

They're twisted and possibly treasonous.

33. Of course we can
Wally World is just the retailer. If we were to shift our economy back towards manufacturing, Wal-Mart would still be selling the same stuff, it would just be American made stuff instead of Chinese. It would cost somewhat more, but the average American would make a lot more, so it more than balances out.

It would come at the cost of huge corporate profits and the wealthy. My heart friggin' bleeds for them.... :sarcasm:
