Theologian Hans Kueng assails President Bush
Theologian Hans Kueng assails President Bush
Dec 3, 2006, 12:40 GMT

Cologne - Catholic theologian Hans Kueng, 78, attacked US President George Bush on Sunday, saying the American leader had caused an 'unprecedented decline in the moral credibility of the United States, even among its friends and allies.'

Swiss-born Kueng was speaking in Cologne, Germany after receiving the Lev Kopelev Prize, an award for those who promote peace.

Kueng said Bush presented himself as a Christian, but in reality pursued a policy of power that disregarded humanity and included 'invasion, inhumane treatment of prisoners of war and civilians and serious breaches of human rights.'

The prize, which does not come with any money, honoured Kueng for his efforts to 'improve understanding between the major religions.'

Kueng, a priest whose best-known book criticised the doctrine of papal infallibility, is active in a foundation to promote ethical views shared by the main religions and has spent most of his life in Germany.

1. Good for him
I think it is important that religious types point out that Bush is morally bankrupt-now if only we could get more US preachers to do the same.

2. it would be cool
it would be cool if the purpose of the second coming of Christ was solely to denounce the actions of GWB. The magnitude of such actions warrants a second coming, if you ask me.

7. Amen to that!
My aunt and uncle attend a lutheran church in WI and every week, the pastor says a prayer for Bush to CONTINUE to be a strong moral leader.....

Now if he would re-word that to something along the lines of...."Dear God, please make Preznit Bush understand he is stupid, incompetent, a murderer, a media whore, lousy father of 2 bimbos, incompassionate....Dear Lord, please make him understand as well it is a sin to use your name in vain to murder and torture innocents...etc.." THEN we would stand a chance in this country.

More TRUE religious folks should step forward and denounce him instead of hoping he is going to enable the rapture they all so ardently want. (course, maybe they all did on the last election)

10. that is a very fitting prayer
and quite hilarious too. I agree 100%, these christians from hell seem to forget that using gods name in vain is a sin and also putting false gods before him.

3. What's the German word for "duh"?
It's amazing how many diverse people and groups from all nationalities, religions, eco-classes, and vocations have lambasted Smirk. The only people who like him are the hate radio/Cabal News losers.

19. No it doesn't but good try...
The word "kleine" means "small" or "a little bit". So your phrase means "a little bit of shit". :hurts:

The word (I think) you meant to use was "keine" which means "no" or "none" as in "keine Scheiße" or "no shit".

However this also does not really translate as the American colloquialism "No shit" as in "No shit Sherlock". :eyes: (that's the best "no shit" smiley I could find)

In German it simply and literally means "No shit" as in "I was looking for that unmistakeable smell of feces but I could find no shit".

Sorry it's early and I'm just having fun.

8. Now I know where traffic jams come from.
Thanks. It's highly commendable when people speak their honest feelings.

But I could have said this in 2000. Why did it take this many years? How do these people drive?

9. Happy to hear of a German Catholic priest who questions Pope's 'infallibility
right ' and Bush's (and truth be told this current Pope's) total lack of basic Christian principles.

He deserves his prize....The year 2000 would have excellent and more timely...yes!

12. He's a theologian- teacher and writer of many books
He's written a huge number of books, lots directed toward non-theologians. Wasn't even liked by the more liberal previous pope. As Catholic theologians go, he's highly sensible- he was involved in writing Vatican 2 in the sixties, which did a lot to modernize Catholic teaching. I'd guess that Ratzinger would despise him.

14. I'm sure Ratinger does despise him...
but I thought the Pope (Rat Face) could still excommunicate teachers as they have done here in the US. I'm surprised he's allowed to say what he does, unless it doesn't blatantly contradict Catholic teaching. Maybe he walks a very fine line.

15. There have been other Catholic theologians who have gone against the pope
especially in the US and in South America. It probably increases ones standing in the scholarly/academic community at large to be worthy of the popes censure. Hans Kung is 78 and famous all over the world.

According to Wikipedia: Küng remains a Catholic priest, but the Vatican has rescinded his authority to teach Catholic theology. Though he had to leave the Catholic faculty, he remained at the University as a professor of Ecumenical Theology.

Basically, he's too intellectually reasonable to be faithful to Catholic teaching, but people like him have more of an impact than those within the Church.

17. I read one of his books, it was very difficult reading
It was a summary of philosophy leading to the conclusion that God exists. I had a lot of trouble reading it, at the time, as I had not read much philosphy (still haven't, really). It's like reading literary criticism, in some ways, because it assumes you have the backround to follow without referencing everything.
