Daschle Will Not Seek Presidency
Daschle Will Not Seek Presidency

He served as a senator representing South Dakotans in Washington for more than 25 years and has invested more than a year laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign.

Tom Daschle was expected to make a decision about running for president by the end of the year, and Saturday, he told KELOLAND News he has decided not to seek the United States' highest office in 2008.

“I've made a decision that I will not seek the presidency of the United States,” Daschle said.

He's spent decades representing South Dakota as a leader in the U.S. Senate. But after visits to key presidential primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire, Daschle says he won't seek a run for the White House.

“I've had a lot of encouragement and I've been very gratified to have the encouragement from within the state and around the country,” Daschle said.

3. You shouldn't make fun of the dead.
What, you mean he's not dead? After watching him "lead" the senate I figured that had to be his excuse for such lousy performance.

18. He'll probably apologize to Bush for not getting out of his way faster
as he sought to obliterate the Constitution.

hands.

He did nothing with it.

5. Thank goodness.....
The blandly boring trio of Bayh, Vilsack and Biden is already in the running. A Daschle announcement would have put people into a coma.

8. A decent man that when facing evil, failed to oppose it
Daschle never understood that Bush was different from every President that preceded him. Daschle also failed to recognize that the GOP was no longer a political party but the Praetorian guard for a budding emperor.

9. Yes. It must be hard for someone in his position to make such a
statement even if it sounds odd to us.

He was very close to the centers of power.

And, there is the little matter of anthrax in the mail.

19. Yes, he had a moment in time which quickly evaporated. With the help of a little anthrax.
A f***ed up time although at the end of the day, Daschle's still alive and Paul Wellstone is not. MKJ

15. I like Tom Daschle
I don't think he would be the strongest Presidential candidate, but I think he would have been more successful than many assume. He managed to hang on in a very red state for several terms, and it took a pretty disgusting attack campaign against him and a Repug President, who won by something like thirty points, being at the top of the ticket, to defeat him, and even then it was a very close election. There were some issues I didn't agree with him on, but really, he was much better than could generally be expected from a Senator from such a "red" state. (Compare Daschle's record to Nelson's of Nebraska's to see what I mean.)

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a re-match against Thune in 2010, unless he's decided to stay out of electoral politics for good. I wouldn't really blame him.

27. I hope he (or someone) can beat Thune...
How many fundamentalist nutcase senators are there? I read somewhere that Thune said that the war in Iraq was a good thing because it might lay the grounds for the development of Christianity there (or something similar). I agree that Daschle seems MUCH better.

32. Thune lost to Johnson in 2002, and became a lobbyist
especially for the DM&E railroad. Thune wins in 2004 and the railroad gets several hundred million dollars in unsecured federal loads to upgrade its railways so that low-sulfur coal from Wyoming can be shipped to power plants across the Midwest. Something like 30 high-speed trains a day, up from two or three lower-speed trains.

I like the idea of burning low-sulfur coal instead of dirtier stuff, but the idea of unsecured loans makes me a little uneasy.

30. Maybe Daschle will go for Johnson's seat if Tim runs for Prez or Veep
I don't think Daschle is done yet in politics. SoDak is a small state and he's a big fish.

I don't blame him for the way BushCo was dealt with. The amount of ruthless power-mongering, blatant lies, evidence fabrication, and just general bloodthirstyness is simply breathtaking.

The article that Randi Rhodes read on the air yesterday very nicely compresses a decade of political maneuvering and a unquenched thirst for power into an easy-to-digest format. Nobody was prepared for this; and the American public, cynical that we may be, still has not and does not comprehend the massiveness of the lies and crimes, nor do they want to.

I'd like to see SD Senator Tim Johnson run with Gore for the 2008 election, and Daschle run for and win Johnson's slot. I don't know who will unseat lobbyist John Thune from the Senate in 2010, but that's a question for later.

the next Queen of England (talented and cute as I am, I doubt Pr William would go for a 52 year old gay American male).

29. It is really nice to see that we, for once, are all in agreement on this one thing...
Daschle was the first Dem to put a "we must work together with this president" up on his website...right after the first Bush selection. 24 hours later, the message had been removed due to the flood of emails and calls that came from We The People.

Naw Tom...go try and grow some corn.

33. Duh, he deserted his party and his country when they both needed him most
I'm sure the good people of Iowa and New Hampshire wasted no time reminding him of that fact.

I cannot fathom why he was ever entertaining the idea in the first place.
