Group wants Hastert deal investigated
Speaker pushed for project near his land

WASHINGTON -- A government watchdog group Monday called for an official investigation into whether House Speaker Dennis Hastert broke the law by pushing for federal funding of a highway project near land he owned west of Chicago.

Hastert (R-Ill.) and two partners turned a profit of more than $3 million last year on land they bought and sold near the proposed route of the Prairie Parkway—earnings that the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington say the investors got because of federal funding pushed by Hastert.

The group is asking the Justice Department to investigate Hastert's actions.

"It looks like Hastert may have broken the law," said Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW. "You are not allowed to use the legislative process purely for your own personal financial benefit, which is what appears to have happened here."

2. No doubt Dennie will welcome the investigation
We all know that republicans are honorable, law abiding citizens who have nothing to hide.

3. Gee, Melanie, ya think?
:banghead:

Too bad she didn't spend more time bring this to the fore in the run up to the election. It hit the news cycle for all of about 36 hours, then POOF!

5. I wonder how much that had to do with Daley's lack of support
for Hastert once Hastert lost the speaker seat. As long as he was speaker, the Daley media machine went easy on Hastert.

After the election and once Daley got out of the way, doors could be opened for an investigation in Illinois.

6. Daley's sitting in the middle of the frying pan
He's been able to steer clear so far, but another investigation bringing down a close political ally and he's likely to be handing over Chicago (and the State) back to the GOP on a silver platter.

(Completely off topic though, I half to say it was absolutely hilarious watching the Republican running for Cook County Board Pres and his supporters storming the building where they were counting the votes! )
