'Supernannies' to tackle antisocial children (UK-Blair)
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/homeaffairs/story/0,,1953354,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=1

A team of "supernannies" is to be sent to some of Britain's most deprived areas to help parents control antisocial children, Tony Blair revealed today.

The parenting experts will be sent to 77 areas with high levels of unruly behaviour, teenage pregnancies and truancy from school.

The £4m scheme will also force the parents of disruptive children to attend parenting courses.

Writing in the Sun newspaper, the prime minister claimed the initiative would tackle the root causes of crime and disorder.

<snip>

Mr Blair denied the scheme would involve "interfering with normal family life", adding: "Life isn't normal if you've got 12-year-olds out every night, drinking and creating nuisance on the street with their parents not knowing or even caring."

3. He should know
From 2000:

Blair's son 'drunk and incapable'

"Prime Minister Tony Blair's 16-year-old son Euan has been arrested for being drunk and incapable...An ambulance had to be called after Euan was discovered vomiting on the pavement..."

Did Tony and Cherie know what their disruptive child was up to? Did they care? :sarcasm:

6. this sounds like Papa Bush and the grocery scanner: "Why don't these poor devils hire decent
governesses? Do they expect their cook, maid, valet, and wiper to raise their children alone? How WILL they learn which fork to use?"

9. They act as if rich folks care about kids...
If they are going to disperse the nannies to ignored kids , they need to do it to all income levels cuz as a nurse in a neonatal ICU, I have seen some of the wealthiest parents literally tell us that we didn't need to teach THEM how to change their new baby's diaper---because their NANNY would be doing that task--they were dead serious.
If pompous, selfish asses like this won't change a diaper do we really think they will be around come the potential troublesome teen years?

10. I'd much rather deal with six years of teenager than two years of shit-filled diapers.
But that's just me.

They still should have learned to change the diapers. What happens if their nanny comes down sick?

7. if the parents can't deal with their children or don't want to
the society is left to deal with them... best to nip this shit in the bud now than to have to spend 4x as much incarcerating them or being a victim of their crimes.

Clearly, whatever the parents are doing, they're doing it wrong and they need some education.

8. This sounds like stuff for a sitcom!
I am sure the 'do-gooders', even if they have genuinely good advice, will get an earful or worse from the parents concerned. British people are known for resenting interference from condescending outsiders. What a stupid idea in all respects.

Glad Tony is going soon; I don't think Gordon Brown would go for something quite this daft.

And who needs parenting advice from someone who arranged for his son to work for a Republican congressman????

11. Stupid idea.
There are better ways to handle "the root causes of crime and disorder." Especially when most of the criminals have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

12. As another poster said above, if parents of disruptive children are
required to attend parenting classes, no matter what their income level, this could cut down on the number of rich brats. :-)
