WASHINGTON, July 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Thanks in large part to the leadership of Rep. Tom Udall (D-3-N. Mex.), the U.S. House of Representatives last week preserved language in the fiscal year 2004 Interior Appropriations bill that protects national park staff and visitors from a damaging White House policy that would outsource to private contractors up to 70 percent of positions in the National Park Service.
"Representative Udall stepped up to protect our national parks, their valued staff, and the experiences of millions of park visitors. He understands the value of the parks to his constituents and all Americans," said Craig Obey, National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) vice president for government affairs. "We also need the Senate and conferees to stand up for our national parks and not allow the administration to put the stewardship of our national heritage in the hands of the lowest bidder." ..
The House also overwhelmingly supported an amendment sponsored by Reps. Doug Bereuter (R-Neb.) and F. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.), which exempts key Park Service archaeology centers from the administration's outsourcing plan.
