Israel digs vast nuke shelter for govt officials
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L08224531.htm

JERUSALEM, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Israel is digging a vast bunker network outside Jerusalem that would allow top government officials to survive a nuclear or chemical attack and see out any war in safety, senior security sources said on Monday.

They said construction began in 2002 amid growing fears over Iran's nuclear programme, seen as an existential threat to the Jewish state although Tehran denies hostile intent.

Israel is widely believed to have as many as 200 nuclear weapons but officials do not discuss its capability.

The bunker complex is modeled on similar Cold War projects in the United States and Switzerland.

2. Don't they mean they are digging a better bunker?
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 10:35 AM by HereSince1628
Oh, lets ratchet up the fear another notch. And the threat must be HUGE because the bunker is "vast."

Amazing how Sharon's and Cheney's governments dig the same issues.
Does anyone know if the "blasting noise" from the VP's residence has stopped?

Do you suppose this is another Halliburton project?

4. "These types?"
They are the government of a sovereign, democratic nation surrounded by enemies and one of those enemies has an active nuclear program and is good friends with terrorists.

Gee, I can't imagine why Israel might build such a bunker.

14. Wow, think about it, the Palestinians only had rocks to throw at
the Zionists for a long time but they graduated to WMD, their own bodies with explosives tied on, to hit back at an Israel that is killing them, destroying their homes, demeaning them and all the rest of the stuff war mongers do.

All the war-mongering, uncharitable rodent leaders will be hiding in caves after unleashing nuclear war on the world.

Revelation 6

12. I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13. and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
15. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16. They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!

11. Exactly, and one wonders why they would want to survive it,
surely they know that they themselves are lying...Well, one thing about it,
they'll have to come out and what will they use for air and food and how will they bury all the bodies?

13. Why?
To do what they could to restore order and save as many of their people as possible. THAT is their job.

And, in the case of Israel, we are likely not talking a full-scale nuclear war, just some terror group setting off a bomb to wipe out a city. To deal with the after-effects of that, and the appropriate military response, Israel must maintain its government.

15. "They" don't even "save their people" now. Cheney and Sharon
just want to save their own worthless asses. In case of nuclear attack even one bomb could wipe out a city and render the soil and water radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years.

These two miscreants surely are not above the law and should be held accountable for the destruction and the deaths they have already caused. If either of them had an ounce of sense much less a modicom of humanity left in them after taking shelter while others suffered they could not want to live.

20. Citizens be damned!!
Seems like Israel is saying..'we're going to do everything in our power to make people hate us enough to drop a nuke and then we will throw nukes out there (if not first) so we have to have enough shelter to make it safe for those who really are responsible for the nukes in the first palce.' Never mind that citizens everywhere really don't want their governments to have or use nukes. Who are they to question authority?'

Heck, it worked with Egypt and Jordan.

The fact that it hasn't worked with the Palestinians might have more to do with THEIR leadership than Israel's.

29. You may want to actually study up on the Israel/Palestine issue
before you comment. I don't think you have any idea of all the attrocities the Israelis (notice I don't say 'Jews') committed against the Palestinians. When the Israelis moved in, they shot and killed any Palestinians who refused to move their homes.

They also pay sub-minimum wage to anyone who is actually allowed to leave Gaza/West Bank to work throughout Israel. They build new highways for the settlements, but fail to connect them to roads in Palestinian areas. They dig water wells for the settlements underneath Palestinian areas. The soldiers shoot to kill kids who throw rocks in protest.

I've also seen amateur video of Palestinian people, including children, who were subjected to 'non-lethal' chemical attacks - it seriously messed them up for weeks.

I suggest you read "Drinking the Sea at Gaza," written by an Israeli Haaretz reporter. You may have a different outlook on the situation.

34. If "doing nothing" somehow means occupying other peoples,
terrorizing them, taking their land and homes, and developing weapons of mass destruction, then I would agree.

But, as you can see, your statement is absurd.

38. what point in history
from it's very beginning the Zionists used violence intimidation terrorism and murder to remove the indigenous population - if they are comepletely innocent from the early 1940's there should be a shitload more palestinians in Haifa just to start. Funny how they were Israeli matyrs but the palestinians are terrorists - funny I thought they were ALL religious bigots and murderers but then I always have called a spade a spade.

then there's the oft repeated falsehood about Israel's democracy - how many people in the occupaied territories get a vote in the government that controls their daily lives? Not even beginning to go into the INSTITUTIONILISED discrimination faced by non jewish Israelis within the 1967 borders - democracies can NOT afford certain citizens rights that others get based PURELY on religious beliefs

23. So when does sharon plan to nuke the neighbors?

or will he show restraint and limit his frolic to East Jerusalem and Gaza?

Either way, Israelis can share the same comfort Americans do - knowing that whatever your government does - the top henchmen will be safe has a very special significance for ordinary moms and dads of any country.

24. it's all sham
No way in hell would any right thinking Muslim (and this goes double for your militant Muslim) would nuke Palestine.

However, having a competitior in nuclear hegemony with Israel would restrain Israel's ability to act out in any way it sees fit with near impunity the way it does now.

So they need to make a big show of how scared they are and how they are this close to being annihilated by those barbarous Muslim hordes as a warm-up act before they go take care of business and bomb Iran.

37. I still actively endorse MAD.
I just wish other countries would subscribe to it more seriously to put a "check" on our illegal government.

I certainly would feel more secure knowing there was a counterforce to the idiots presently in-charge of our miserable excuse of a government.

Only in the Peace Way can Peace truly be secured amongst the Unpeaceful, decidedly sour-smelling Arabs. And if you don't believe me, listen to Daniel Pipes - he's got a kind, trustworthy, nay - PEACEFUL face.
