4,500 U.S. Troops Might Head to Liberia

WASHINGTON -- Some 4,500 more American sailors and Marines have been ordered to position themselves closer to Liberia to be ready for possible duty in the embattled West African nation, officials said Monday.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld signed a deployment order over the weekend sending a three-ship amphibious ready group from its position off the Horn of Africa into the Mediterranean Sea, defense officials said. That would put the group in a position to get to the west coast of Africa faster, if needed for an evacuation of Americans, peacekeeping or some other mission.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in the Liberian capital of Monrovia was hit by mortar fire Monday, and U.S. officials in Washington said a number of building in the complex had been hit by gunfire, though they believe the embassy itself is not a target.

1. Keeping up with Killed American Servicemembers may become
difficult. Are these deployments supposed to keep our mind off the economy? Its a good thing there is nothing but honor and integrity coming from the White House.

2. The fact that U.S. can absolutely not afford another

"theatre of opperations" is something that will bear negatively
on the Economy that is already struggling. The past efforts to
deflect public interest toward war is no longer a valid strategy
because it focuses immediately on the horrendous failure in Iraq.
Bush's spin is spinning back on him at an escalating rate.

3. Another example of W's strong and decisive leadership
NOT! I guess the Clinton administration didn't leave plans for Liberia behind for W&Co. to take credit for.

4. Three's a charm
That would be three quagmires this administration will have gooten our troops embroiled in.

I think this one will be the breaking point. This is why they're doing marketing research on the draft being the new fall product line.

5. Iraq
Can you imagine being a solider over in Iraq and getting orders to go to Liberia? We are going to be losing people in droves soon, either from shots fired or not re-upping.

7. Why do they keep repeating the lie that Liberia...
...was founded in the 19th century by freed American slaves? It was founded by slave owners AP. Check the history books dummies.

8. Another mistake
How many more of our troops will be coming home in body bags? One more big mistake in a long list of mistakes.

9. Liberia was founded by a humanitarian group
It was founded greatly with the help of a humanitarian group that believed slavery was evil (not necessarily former slave owners, unless they were repentant former slave owners), and it was done for purposes of giving blacks their freedom.

10. This is too little, too late
And by going in half-assed we are only going to lose a lot more people as a result.

This was another reason not to invade Iraq, because when you have a real crisis you're hands are tied and you can't respond appropriately.

In the meantime, Charles Taylor has vowed to fight to the last man. What's killing another 100,000 people of so? He can pile them up on the bodies that he left in Sierra Leone.
