Al-Qaeda in bid to 'influence US poll'From correspondents in Washington

THE Pentagon's chief spokesman today attributed the rising violence in Iraq to attempts by al-Qaeda to influence the US elections and stir up opposition to President George W. Bush.

Eric Ruff, the Pentagon press secretary, stopped short of saying that al-Qaeda wanted a Democratic victory in the November 7 elections and denied emphatically that he was implying that.

He singled out a Washington Post report quoting a local al-Qaeda leader as saying the group's leader, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, wanted redoubled attacks "to have a great effect on the American elections".

"It would seem that if they can increase the violence, they can increase opposition to the war and have an influence against the president," Mr Ruff said.

An entire nation with less than 3 hours electricity a day, cities & towns nothing but piles of rubble and rotting stinking corpses...and the pentagon thinks Iraqis give one shit about elections in America.

ROTFLMAO!!!

No wonder, is it, the world thinks of Americans as the most arrogant & ignorant people on the planet.

5. Nothing that we see in the next week can replace what we have seen in the
last 3 1/2 years. Most people have their minds made up already, or they shouldn't be allowed to vote.

8. Any insurgency wants to stir up opposition to their occupiers. We did.
I don't understand the logic of this line of reasoning. That, Isn't It Awful, They're Just Doing This to Stir Up Opposition to The President. Well, I guess the fact that the Pentagon is attributing all the violence to al Qaeda, instead of also noting the insurgent sectarian and inter-sect groups that are also committing it, answers my question as to what their logic is. The Pentagon is in actuality stumping for Republican victories in the midterms. Disgraceful. This is such a horrible nightmare we're living through.

9. Funny
I find it ammusing that this administration has the ego to think that terrorists care if there is oposition to Bush or not. If anything he keeps them in buisness so why would they try to stir up problems for him.

11. Scraping the bottom of the barrel for reasons to vote Republican.
Vote for us so the violence in Iraq will stop (ain't gonna happen), even though we're the ones who caused it in the first place by supporting bush and his policies.

Remember the "last throes"?

Welcome to DU, daysleeper! :hi:

12. ...from the party that brought you voodoo economics,
voodoo vote influencing?

So let's see how this works, from the perspective of a supposed vote-influencin' Iraqi combatant...
if this here (Sunni/Shia) kills this here neighbor of (Shia/Sunni) descent, MAYBE it'll get discovered by local authorities (although many authorities can't/won't go into certain war torn areas) who MAYBE will report it (although locals can't keep complete records) and MAYBE international media will pick up the story (although news of deaths is spotty and makes up a lesser percentage of US news content) and MAYBE Americans (who as a whole haven't follow Iraqi news in detail) will notice it and MAYBE they'll vote out the incumbent administration (despite low US voter turnout percentage).

Wow, that's as effective as giving a corporation a million dollars in tax cuts in the hopes of creating one (1) whole private sector job.

20. The entire GLOBE is going to be watching this election closely. Most
of them will be celebrating if there's a Dem takeover of Congress. At least there'd be some hope that Americans aren't ALL idgits.

Welcome to DU Streamlake. :hi: Has Al Q taken over the Iranian gov't as well, or were you going someplace else with that observation? If Dems are going to "hammer home utter disdain" for any "bombing", it should be against rampant terror and bombing by anyone (including Bushco).

22. Note the wording...
It isn't the Iraqi-born and led 'insurgents' and Maliki death squads who are causing all of the violence, but Al-Qaeda, the convenient boogy man for desperate Republicans.

Same big lie, different year.
