Taiwan's government says it will repeal referendum law

ANNIE HUANG, Associated Press Writer Monday, December 8, 2003

(12-08) 01:47 PST TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) --

Taiwan's government on Monday decided to revive a bitter battle over a recently passed law legalizing referendums, arguing that the historic measure was deeply flawed and "ridiculous."

Passage of the law on Nov. 27 marked a stinging defeat for the ruling party, which failed to win support for key parts of its version of the bill. The opposition dominated the issue and used its slim legislative majority to pass a watered-down law.

Cabinet official Hsu Chih-hsiung told reporters that the government wanted to send the law back to the legislature for revisions because it was riddled with problems.

"I think in our lawmaking history, it would be impossible to find a law that has so many problems and is so ridiculous," Hsu said. (snip/...)
