Iraq's Sunni clerics warn of civil war
US plans to deploy Iraqi militia forces from
Kurdish or Shia units who fought ousted Iraq
president Saddam Hussein's government could
spark a civil war and force the break-up of
Iraq.

Sunni religious leaders issued the warning on Sunday.

Using militiamen to help restore security to Iraq would be "to
ignore a large section of Muslims and push them into the ranks of
the opposition," said a statement issued by the Committee of
Muslim Ulama in Iraq.

It would be "an attempt to break up Iraq," the statement said,
recalling the Lebanese civil war between 1975 and 1990 when
rival militias battled for control.

2. AARGHHHH!
People have been predicting this for years. It was completely predictable from the start of this mess. The Shia are going to have the most influence on the process, so the Sunni clerics will incite their followers and by spring we should have a fine, fine mess.

It may be too late for our dem candidates to do anything by Jan 2005 but get the hell out of there.

16. Yeah, It might help sort the field....
as all those candidates who think we should stay there and reconstruct and democratize Iraq, will be left in a hard spot to defend their earlier views. How old is their civilization by comparison to our 225 yr old demmocracy? Might be best to give them total autonomy to sort out their own, and the UN only help out economically from outside the country.

I'm not trying to be all smart and all but as you said those who read/post on DU as well as other sites I am sure could see all of this coming . My friends continually ask me how the hell I knew __________ (example Syria/Iran being next -long story but when the rhetoric got turned up several of them called me).

Oh yeah and I read Will Pitt's instant book "The War in Iraq: What the Bush team doesn't want you to know" Scott Ritter (okay hard to bring that name up in conversation) called this to a "T" and much of that was corroberated (sp?) in the months leading up to this disaster. Excuse me.... f**king disaster.

8. Yeah, the Lebanese model of democracy, circa the late 70s
That a swell prescription for ending violence and stife in Iraq. Just ask the Marines.

These buys (Bush* et al) really don't know how to get themselves out of the mess they've gotten all of us into before the election.

Anyone watch 60s minutes "Operation Iraqi Freedom?" segment last night? Note the question mark, which was red on the graphic last night.

One would think a Cleric would know such things.

Back off on the jihad a little and things will get better.

Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 04:46 PM by BeFree
They won't allow UN Peacekeeping troops but they will allow deadly soldiers?

Just more proof of the real goal of the invasion and occupation of Iraq --The destruction everything that moves.
