Santorum issues GOP call to arms

MYERSTOWN — Likening the times to the late 1930s as Nazi Germany was rising to power, Sen. Rick Santorum said last night that if he loses his re-election bid, it could set the stage for terrorism to become more of a threat than the Nazis ever were.

“If we are not successful here and things don’t go right in the election, there’s a good chance that the course of our country could change,” he said. “We are in the equivalent of the late 1930s, and this election will decide whether we are going to continue to appease or whether we will stand and fight while we have a chance to win without devastating consequences.

“And you here in Pennsylvania — you here in this room — will have a huge role to play as to what happens.”

Santorum also said the American people must have the courage to name the enemy.

“I’ve been going around this state for over a year, and many of you have heard me talk about this over and over again,” he said. “The threat that we face is Islamic fascism, and we have to have the courage to say so.”

He's more right than he knows. Amazing how different people can look at the same set of information and come to basically opposite conclusions.

My understanding of the late thirties in Germany is:
- A political party came to power that did not tolerate dissent
- A minor dispute with another country (Poland) was magnified into a threat of war and an increase in military strength
- A pretense was faked in order to "justify" an attack on that other country
- The political party/government of Germany openly expressed it's imperialist ambition

There are more parallels too; breaking treaties, "unitary executive" type authority figure, religious trappings, youth indoctrination, hatred of various groups.
