Senator laughs at foe's surgery claim

BY JOE MAHONEY and DAVID SALTONSTALL
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Sen. Hillary Clinton yesterday shot back at rival John Spencer's plastic surgery claim, saying yearbook photo was 'cute.'
Sen. Hillary Clinton doesn't really want to reduce her reelection campaign to a debate on her looks.

But if you must know, the former First Lady thinks she was a cutie in high school.

The odd discussion about her appearance came after her long-shot opponent, Republican John Spencer, suggested to the Daily News that Clinton had undergone "millions of dollars" in plastic surgery, and pointed out she used to be much less attractive.

"You ever see a picture of her back then? Whew," he told Daily News columnist Ben Smith during a plane ride to Rochester last Friday. "I don't know why Bill married her."

I'd be surprised if she's had any.

Senator Clinton is a very attractive lady, NOT that that has anything to do with anything. Madeleine Albright isn't some sexy hoochie mama, and she was one of the SOSs EVER... and way more attractive than, say, Kissinger or Rummy.

23. Not that it matters but I don't think she has had any surgery either
The biggest improvement in HRC's appearance IMO is that her hair and eyebrows have been changed (in a traditional salon I am sure...although I don't think freepers and repukes are familiar with basic grooming practices so how would they know that looking better is possible without radical surgery)

She has also had some better instruction in how to dress in recent years.

Furthermore the repukes have a big nerve talking about ANYONE having plastic surgery given the fact that Laura Bush's face practically wraps around the back of her head these days!

26. Agreed it doesn't make a difference
But, you're right: she has a flattering hairstyle now, and good eyebrows. And, she dresses to flatter her figure. No signs of even Botox.

And yeah -- Laura (and Liddy Dole) has that "Joker" face that Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore (among others) have gotten with a bad facelift... or one too many.

HRC also doesn't use too much makeup, which also makes her look very nice.

H. Clintons's generation were not into makeup, body image and elaborate hairdos. Young women and men of that educated generation were more interested in affairs outside their personal appearence. Affairs such as women's rights, war and peace, political integrity, and the desire for a better world and society.

76. If I remember right, we called it being "real."
Something far too many repukes don't know enough about to realize that it's an attribute, not a liability, to be themselves. Some of them are so phoney, and you know they have to lie to themselves. How else could they still be driving around with Bush/Cheney '04 bumper stickers? My mom always said that pretty is as pretty does. Hillary is not perfect, but she's not anywhere near like another former first lady I could mention who is black-hearted ugly through-and-through.

35. Is it just the media? I have seen touted ...
... Democratic presidential aspirants criticized in the blogosphere for being too good looking.

Of course, I had to wait until someone Obama was touted as a presidential candidate to make that plural ... before Obama, I only saw the critique levelled at Edwards. But that may be because I do not spend enough time online ... for all I know people have criticized Clark, Feingold and all the other people touted as running for the 2008 nomination as too good looking.

I'm not denying that, but the tactic of using superficial attacks, of using inanity, as a tool is part of the whole bag of propaganda tricks the republicans have developed. "Gore Sighs". "Kerry looks French". "Dukakis in a tank". And with media control they get their barrage of inanity out there in the greek chorus of media talking point stenographers, competing with our attempts to discuss actual issues. They can't win on the issues. They can only divert and lie and confuse, and they are very good at it.

I forgot the classic superficial attack: "dean screams".

66. Bingo. I think that's behind a lot of the criticism of male Dems' appearance.
Often when they criticize Dem women, they imply that they're not womanly enough in some way. They have a very rigid view of gender roles ... and sadly, a lot of the public also seems to.

68. Won't disagree with that.
I think in fact it is all part of the psyops used to portray the Democratic Party as 'soft' as 'feminine' - as unable to be firm enough or lead us through these supposedly perilous times.

Gore sighs, Dean screams, Kerry looks 'french' and can't make up his mind, Pelosi is (oddly) 'scary' while Clinton is 'ugly'. My point was that these superficial personal attacks are not made exclusively against women, not that they aren't misogynist.

I do think Hillary is an attractive person, but what diff. does that make? ... now, back in college/law school, she obviously concentrated on her MIND rather than her makeup ... so ...

Bill Clinton has told the story of how he brought Hillary home to meet his own heavily made-up, big-haired mom, who did not approve of Hillary because she didn't doll herself up. She wanted him to date beauty queens.

Bill said to his mother, "Mama, I need to be with someone I can TALK to."

(And BTW, tell Hillary's desperate opponent to take a look at Laura Bush. Them draggin'-on-a-cig lines around her mouth don't just disappear by themselves. Or Liddy Dole -- who has had a complete face TRANSPLANT).

54. Was he trying to hurt her feelings? While such tactics might work on Laura ...
a well accomplished woman like Hilary Clinton did not base her life and self esteem around her physical appearance. And as others have already pointed out, she was never 'ugly....' whatever that means :eyes:

72. Rowr..
She looks like a real girl to me. Right...she isn't a supermodel...but I appreciate a natural-looking woman over silicone any day.

Why did Bill marry her? My guess is she's pretty, smart, and kind. Just a stab in the dark, though.

Spencer's statement will cost him some votes.

70. Didn't find her yearbook foto unappealing... typical b/w
and better than average look.

Maybe someone should get a hold of the yearbook from his high school and have him rate the girls. Without the names. And then post it on the internet so all his former female classmates can see his response. Of course, make sure his wife is not in the pick if she attended same high school.

74. She has a nice photo..She is cute.
He should cough up his yearbook photo if he really wants to make an issue of physical appearance.

What a pity he can't make an issue of the issues...

81. She was probably cute in high school
and got worn-looking after she married the prick. Since he dumped her, she probably looks great.

73. Spencer was so hot that he got 3 women to marry him.
And one of them was willing to have two of his kids while he was still married to wife #2. Family values, and all...
But who cares about that...at least he voted to ban gay marriage.

82. What if she has had plastic surgery?
Does he think this means people shouldn't vote for her?

The last time I checked it was legal.

I've never heard anyone raise a concern that plastic surgery is unethical. I've only ever heard people criticized when they've had "too much work" - and we all can name a few.

Has Spencer been living in America for the last 10 years? Plastic surgery is right behind poker as the national past time! There are four or five television shows about nothing but cosmetic surgery.

Take all cosmetic surgery patients and divide them into D and R and I bet you it's about 30% D and 70% R.

Democrats generally can't financially afford to be as concerned about their appearance. We're too worried about trying to put food on the table and pay for the health care that keeps us alive.
