Bush buries 'stay the course' slogan for Iraq

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US
President George W. Bush has retired his "stay the course" slogan for
Iraq, worried about its use as a weapon against his Republican Party in November elections, the White House said.

"He's stopped using it," said spokesman Tony Snow. "It allowed critics to say, well, here's an administration that's just embarked upon a policy and not looking at what the situation is, when, in fact, it's just the opposite."

Opposition Democrats, hoping the unpopular conflict will help them take control of the US Congress in the November 7 legislative elections, have used the refrain in political advertisements accusing Republicans of sticking by a failed policy for waging the war.

Bush appears to have last used the expression on August 30, when he vowed: "We will stay the course, we will help this young Iraqi democracy succeed, and victory in Iraq will be a major ideological triumph" in the war on terrorism.

"The president is determined not to leave Iraq short of victory. But he also understands that it's important to capture the dynamism of the efforts that have been ongoing to try to make Iraq more secure," said Snow.

14. Exactly......Do it for no other reason then to prove what a bald faced liar..
El Shrimpo is. If you start playing that clip over and over of Bush lying to Stephanopolis that they never said stay the course and then show him saying it over and over and over and over again that will sink into the psyche and people will finanlly realize that this guy is a congenital liar and I think a sociopath who doesn't know how to tell the truth. I think in fact Bush who has never succeced at anything in his life has always had an incredible fear of actually having to accomplish something and now that he has to put up or shut up he really can't. he is in fact ...THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER!

My Bumber sticker of the day;

HELP CLEAN UP ANOTHER GEORGIE BUSH MESS.....VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

That ad would look something like this:

Open up with a still of a young Gerogie with a voice over....

"He avoided service in Vietnam by joining the Texas Air National Guard...He left before he finished his commitment"!

Next another still of Georgie a bit older now....

"He attempted to run oil companies in Texas where finding oil was as easy as scratching the surface. His Fathers friends bailed him out.

Next old Gerogie with the baseball cap....

"He finaly made some money at the Baseball game.......After he got the Taxpayers to pay for a new Stadium.

( I am sure there are more tidbits about Georgies "Business" acumen and you could expand on that as it fits)

The final shot is of present day Georgie....

" Now Bush has taken us into another "Business' the war business and just as he has failed in the past he is now leading a failing plan in Iraq. We need a change we need ideas we need courage we ned a Democratic Congress. Stop the Bush fiasco let the Adults take over and send Georgie out to open new Malls. Make Bush the lamest Duck you have ever seen! VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

Why is it the French that are telling us that our president has stopped using a phrase, as if to suggest that the words that come out of his mouth are nothing more than marketing slogans?

Bush, Facing Iraq Dissent, Jettisons ‘Stay the Course’
By JIM RUTENBERG and DAVID S. CLOUD
WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 — The White House said Monday that President Bush was no longer using the phrase “stay the course” when speaking about the Iraq war, in a new effort to emphasize flexibility in the face of some of the bloodiest violence there since the 2003 invasion.

“He stopped using it,” said Tony Snow, the White House press secretary. “It left the wrong impression about what was going on and it allowed critics to say, ‘Well, here’s an administration that’s just embarked upon a policy and not looking at what the situation is,’ when, in fact, it is the opposite.”

Mr. Bush used the slogan in a stump speech on Aug. 31, but has not repeated it for some time. Still, Mr. Snow’s pronouncement was a stark example of the complicated line the White House is walking this election year in trying to tag Democrats as wanting to “cut and run” from Iraq, without itself appearing wedded to unsuccessful tactics there.

Democrats have increasingly pressed a case this fall contending that Republicans are stubbornly proposing to “stay the course” in a failing effort to stanch violence in Iraq — an approach that strategists in both parties consider to have been fairly successful, especially as violence has continued to mount in Baghdad.

In the last few weeks a number of Republican lawmakers and party elders have also come forward to express doubts about whether the administration’s approach to stabilizing Iraq is succeeding and to suggest new strategies.

Mr. Bush and his aides have met those complaints with a renewed emphasis on adaptability for the United States’ war plan. Mr. Bush has stressed — as he did in an interview with ABC News on Sunday — that he is “not patient forever” and expects the Iraqis to take more responsibility in securing their own country.

as in never happened.

I heard that by not saying "stay the course" anymore, it will allow us to better adapt and quickly change strategies when dealing with an ever changing enemy in Iraq. I'm convinced. Aren't you?

Bush's denying "stay the course" is like "Samantha and Endora's magic" trying to erase the past. Very funny. also links going back to 2003 right after the Iraq invasion up through a couple of weeks ago showing the 'stay the course' mantra over the years
