White House defends Bush's Iraq-Vietnam comment

Less than three weeks before crucial elections, the White House defended comments by President George W. Bush on possible similarities between the wars in Iraq and Vietnam.
Bush acknowledged on Wednesday that the current steep spike in violence in Iraq "could be" compared to the Tet Offensive, which is widely considered to be a key point in the souring of the US public on the Vietnam War.

Bush "was making a point that he's made before, which is that terrorists try to exploit pictures and try to use the media as conduits for influencing public opinion in the United States," said White House spokesman Tony Snow.
"We do not think that there's been a flipover point," he said. "The president's determined it's not going to happen with Iraq, because you have a president who is determined to win."

...

"It is possible -- although we don't have a clear pathway into the minds of terrorists, it is possible they are trying to use violence right now as a way of influencing the elections," said Snow.

"But the one thing that nobody should have any doubt about is that we're going win," said the spokesman.

1. "And," Snow added, "he didn't really know what the Tet Offensive
was, to be fair. He just didn't want to invite a whole lot more questions on it, so he had to agree. It's a technique you learn when you are dumb as dirt."

5. More: "You withdraw when you win." - Tony Snow (AP)
White House Nixes Partitioning Iraq

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

Thursday, October 19, 2006

(10-19) 11:34 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Awaiting the recommendations of a commission exploring U.S. options
in Iraq, the White House on Thursday emphatically ruled out some
proposals to end the long and unpopular war.

Presidential spokesman Tony Snow said a suggestion to divide Iraq
into Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish regions, each with high degrees of
autonomy, was a "nonstarter." Similarly, he said a phased withdrawal
of American troops — perhaps by 5 percent every two months — also
was a "nonstarter."

"You withdraw when you win," Snow said. "Phased withdrawal is a way
of saying, `Regardless of what the conditions are on the ground,
we're going to get out of Dodge.'"

Vice President Dick Cheney said the United States was not looking
for a way out of Iraq. "I know what the president thinks. I know
what I think. And we're not looking for an exit strategy. We're looking
for victory," Cheney said in an interview posted on Time magazine's
Web site Thursday.

So, the exit strategy will be by helicopter from the roof of the U.S. embassy.

6. uhh, tony, we aren't buying any of it. the violence has been increasing
steadily for so long that it obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with our elections and everything to do with our presence there.

THEY'VE SAID SO, TONY. they've told us to leave, and they've vowed to fight us until all of their fighters are dead... don't you get it? it's a friggin' war, tony, not some sort of October surprise for the Democrats.

if you actually accept the crap you're spewing, Tony, your breakfast must consist of Jack Daniels, two Demerols and a donut.

12. So if America withdraws, it's because the people didn't have the
stomach for it....and they didn't have the stomach for it because of the "liberal" media pushing all the bad news and none of the good news and being used by the terorists...and anti-war activists influencing the people and "cut and run" Democrats pushing for - well, cutting and running...so if America withdraws, it's not because Bush failed or his policy failed....or it was wrong or criminal to invade to begin with...

it won't be Bush's fault....he tried

All I'm hearing is the future excuse of the Bush Regime

16. Congress can make the President withdraw our troops
and as soon as the new Democrat led House and Senate are in session they need to say exactly that. We have given the President a number of chances to bring our troops home and he has refused now we the Congress of the U.S. enact law under the war powers act that gives the President 60 days to bring out troops back home.

Oh I can't wait.... Bush just put your lame duck hat on and sit in the corner and color... oh never mind you and your staff will be too busy running around trying to head off the investigations into why we are in Iraq in the first place and when America learns the truth. Oh happy day.... Not even the remaining Pubbies few as they may be will stand up for you... You will be impeached found guilty and removed from office with over 60 pecent of the Senate voting for it and then we will let the War Crimes tribunals start...

17. You think insurgents follow American politics that closely?
I wouldn't think a mid-term election a half a world away would be of much interest to people who can't get electricity, etc. Do they really think insurgents are sitting around watching Tucker and O'Reilly in English, discussing Congressional races?
