Television journalist shot dead in Baghdad

An Iraqi journalist working for government-run TV was killed in a drive-by shooting in southern Baghdad, police said on Saturday, in the latest in a string of attacks on media workers.

Raed Qais al-Shammari, who worked for the al-Iraqiya channel, had been standing near his home talking with a friend when he was shot at around 10:00 pm on Friday in the violence-wracked Dora neighbourhood, police Lt Maitham Abdul Razzaq said.

The attack follows the killings Thursday of 11 people at a TV station in Baghdad.

Shiite militiamen are suspected of targeting the Shaabiya station, believing it was backing their Sunni-Arab rivals.

Al Iraqiya is part of the Iraqi Media Net, which includes the al-Sabah, or 'The Morning,' newspaper, which has also been the target of recent insurgent attacks.
