NFL MAKES FANTASY PASS-Internet gambling-curbing legislation
October 10, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - The National Football League used a big bucks lobbyist to ram through Internet gambling-curbing legislation in the final minutes of the legislative session, sources revealed.

But opponents of the bill charge that the NFL broke the rules when it fast-tracked legislation that never even got a vote in the Senate - a trick play that provided a big exemption for fantasy football.

The NFL runs its own fantasy football site, and gets royalties from others. Fantasy contest companies generate up to $200 million a year, according to an industry association.

1. Poor NFL. They must need the money.
:sarcasm:

2. Last week on OTL Sunday Ley had on a guy from the NFL
and one who runs an internet gambling site. The NFL guy steadfastly maintains that gambling has nothing to do with the NFL's popularity. :wtf: And he wasn't laughing when he said it, though the gambling mogul was laughing out loud. The NFL takes denial lessons from Smirk.

4. Agreed. That's pretty impressive denial
They might've ran that past me 5 or 10 years ago and I might've politely refrained from laughter but, just look at what ALL the internet sports news sites are about. They're about feeding people information that matters to them because they're betting on the games. I'm not saying that's wrong. I'm saying it's reality.

3. Yeah well Congress runs by its OWN rules.
Trick plays are legal if Congress says they are. The NFL got a win, just like the Mickey Mouse Perpetual Copyright Protection Acts that come along once in a while. And the bottom line is, the Senate voted for the ENTIRE bill, so not having had a vote on putting something into the bill in no way creates some constitutional crisis.

The trick play scored a touchdown and the NFL walked away with the win. Simple as that.

Meanwhile, offshore internet gambling companies are experiencing an Inquisition.
