9:34 am: Richardson urges diplomacy in North Korea

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson, a former U.N. ambassador who has parleyed with North Korea, is urging diplomacy in dealing with an announcement by North Korea that it had set off an underground nuclear test.

Richardson, who said he considers the test a hostile act, urged the Bush administration to seek immediate support from the United Nations Security Council for U.S. efforts to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

The crisis needs face-to-face diplomacy, Richardson said in a statement released late Sunday.

---snip---

Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said the U.N. Security Council "must take swift action to stop this rogue nation from exporting this technology."

---

Name and Place your bets: How long will it take for the repugs to issue a statement or otherwise "label" Richardson and/or any who agree with face-to-face diplomacy as "appeasers"?

1. Well, a new president might be able to make up for Bush's insults.
If we're all still alive by then.

2. It's time to bring the grown-ups (Dems) in to clean up this mess.

3. Dem's have been saying this for a while now. Bush has ignored
the recommendation and look where we are. I think the finger needs to be pointed at Bush, to explain exactly what he plans to do.

4. They do not know the meaning of the word, 'diplomacy'.
All the Bush administration does is arrogantly insult, saber rattle and then idly sit by while countries like N. Korea and Iran build up their arsenals. Diplomacy would be the wise thing to do, but they'll probably bomb first.
