Democrats Poised To Assume Majority Of Governorships
Democrats Poised To Assume Majority Of Governorships
Skip directly to the full story.
By MARK Z. BARABAK Los Angeles Times

Published: Oct 9, 2006

For the first time since the 1994 Republican landslide, Democrats are poised to attain a majority of the nation's governorships, giving the party an important political toehold regardless of who wins the battle to control Congress.

As voters itch for change, election handicappers forecast Democratic gains of four to eight seats on Nov. 7, saying the Republican-held governor's chairs in New York and Ohio are the most likely to switch parties. The Democrats must gain four governorships to hold a majority nationwide.

Massachusetts, Arkansas, Colorado and Maryland also look promising for Democratic candidates, according to campaign analysts, favoring several more pickups. In Massachusetts - the land of Kennedys - a win would mark the first time a Democratic governor has sat under the gold Capitol dome in more than a dozen years.

Four seats that appear to be toss-ups at this point: Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, all states that could prove vital in the 2008 presidential campaign. All save Minnesota have a Democratic governor now.

3. Because we fielded a bad candidate
who ran a very negative primary campaign and has no clue to run a general election campaign.

12. Please. learn the art of making distinctions.
Angelides is a bad candidate. Which means, he is a poor politician at the retail and wholesale level.

This does not mean I support the policies or candidacies of his GOP opponent. That's a straw man you've set up and a shoddily constructed one at that.

Angelides miscalculated tremendously by goign so negative in the primary. He alienated a chunk of his own base that has yet to come home.

And he has been almost invisible as a campaigner. What's he been doing to expand his foundation of support?

Not enough.

He's a bad candidate. Bad candidates lose.

And if you're going to waste my time by throwing shit in the air, have the decent to eat some M&M's first. That ways at least its technicolor bullshit.

8. End of Taft, End of Blackwell!
For both, their political careers are over. Hopefully, Strickland will be able to help turn the tide around in this troubled state.

9. This is a very under reported story...
I just heard it today on TV. Bill Richardson mentioned it on Tweety. First I had heard of it, but excellent news. The governors control a lot. In many states they can control who the Sec of State is, that controls the election process in many states. If we get some traction here, maybe we can fix the Diebold e-voting mess.

13. I think all the toss up states
are leaning (some ever so slightly) democratic now. I know Granholm has picked up in most polls I've seen recently. Apparently DeVos' appearance in the debate didn't help him much.

I've seen a few other polls for the other states with Dem candidates having small leads.
