WP: Kolbe Saw Foley's Messages In 2000 (R-AZ)

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 9, 2006; Page A01

Another Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.

A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe's press secretary, Korenna Cline.

The revelation pushes back by at least five years the date when a member of Congress has acknowledged learning of Foley's questionable behavior. A timeline issued by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) suggested that the first lawmakers to know, Rep. John M. Shimkus (R-Ill.), the chairman of the House Page Board, and Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-La.), became aware of "over-friendly" e-mails only last fall. It also expands the universe of players in the drama beyond members, either in leadership or on the page board.

A source with direct knowledge of Kolbe's involvement said the messages shared with Kolbe were sexually explicit, and he read the contents to The Washington Post under condition that they are not reprinted. But Cline denied the source's characterization, saying only that the messages had made the former page feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, she said, "corrective action" was taken. Cline said she still has not yet determined whether that action went beyond Kolbe's confrontation with Foley.

1. I Demand The Repub Leadership Go UNDER OATH TO TESTIFY
About when they first heard about Foley. There's no evidence that they DIDN'T know, and A LOT of evidence that they did. We need them under oath.

4. Time to fire up the polygraph and wire 'em all up..

Everyone's just being entirely too coy about this whole issue..

This whole nonsense about "allowing" gays to be republican legislators as long as the "keep quiet" and all around them pretend they are "confirmed bachelors who just haven't met the right woman yet", is nauseating and must stop..

the stupid SECRECY (a fairly common ploy with republicans) is the real disgrace..

the bigoted "base" that elects these people "knowing-yet-pretending-not to" and forces them to live false lives are just as much to blame ..

I do not ordinarily ascribe to "outing" gay people, BUT when someone with such a huge "secret" chooses to align themselves with a gay-hating group like the republicans, it's almost a favor TO out them, so they can finally live real lives and run for office as who they are...not with a wink-wink-nod-nod..

24. He sent out fliers supporting bush in 04
saying that Bush's economic policy has worked wonders for the American people. The guy for some reason is highly respected here, but light blue Tucson seems to have this thing about showing respect to Republicans that aren't members who aren't in the upper ranks of The American Flat Earth City for Jesus Brigade.

Only noble thing I've seen this guy do so far is refuse to support Randy Graf for his seat.

The arrogant republicans seem totally unable to police themselves. This continues to get sicker.

But when we've practised quite a while how vastly we improve our style.

20. What I don't get is why none of the Pugs stopped to think about the other
pages that might have also been victims? These are some seriously depraved individuals. They cared more about Foley's money than their supposed aversion to the "gay lifestyle" or protecting children.

What hypocritical F*ckers!

like pro-family or homo agenda - it's all about getting and keeping power, money and influence.
