PRIME SUSPECTS - OUTING OF KELLY
DEFENCE Secretary Geoff Hoon and spin chief Alastair Campbell emerged last night as the prime suspects for the outing of weapons expert Dr David Kelly.

The pair stood accused of providing background information on the Ministry of Defence scientist which enabled journalists to identify him.

It was Mr Hoon's MoD which first announced that Dr Kelly - still to be named at that stage - had come forward to admit he had talked to the BBC.

The ministry referred to the shy academic as "an expert on WMD" who was "not a member of the intelligence services".

It was the press office of Downing Street director of communications Mr Campbell which gave further details on Dr Kelly.

1. blood on their hands
-snip-
Labour MP Dianne Abbott said of Dr Kelly: "I am hearing his pension was being threatened and that he was told he could face trial under the Official Secrets Act.

"If this is true, then Geoff Hoon should consider his position right now. If Geoff Hoon had not put this man's name in the public domain, he would be alive today."

Senior backbencher Dr Ian Gibson said Mr Campbell - exonerated a fortnight ago on the casting vote of a Commons committee chairman over "sexing up" an Iraqi weapons dossier - was far from being cleared.

4. That is blackmail
and if that happened, was Kelly blackmailed into making a statement
to the FAC distancing himself from Gilligan's reporting?

3. name correction: Joseph Wilson, not James
and yes, that was a chill tactic by the Dark Forces. Even General Tommy Franks was publicly chastised for supposedly allowing his wife to see classified information recently. It isn't just Saddam Hussein who threatened families of soldiers to control them.
