Elections chiefs won't send notice about Foley with ballot

All eight elections supervisors in former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's congressional district said Thursday they will not include a notice with absentee ballots to inform voters that the Republican has resigned and his votes will count for Joe Negron.

"I will not include anything with the absentee ballots," said Gertrude Walker, elections supervisor in St. Lucie County, the county with the most voters in the sprawling 16th Congressional District. "Our attorney has looked at this, and I feel he has provided excellent advice."

The idea of including a notice with absentee ballots came Tuesday from Florida Division of Elections Director Dawn Roberts, who e-mailed the eight supervisors recommended language to include with absentee ballots and to post inside voting booths.

On Thursday, the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections issued a legal opinion that state statutes do not allow for notices to be included in absentee ballots.

"I don't believe that an enclosure of any information sheet on the change in candidate is appropriate to be mailed with the ballots," said Ron Labasky, attorney for the supervisors association.

3. AP says they "may" post signs at voting places.

This doesn't contradict the article above which states that they won't mail anything extra with absentee ballots.

"State Democratic Party Chairwoman Karen Thurman sent a letter to state officials noting that state laws prohibit signs from being posted at polling places."

4. Ah, this brings back all those fond memories of right-wing mouth breathers
burbling their insults claiming Florida Democratic voters had to be exceptionally stupid to screw up their ballots in 2000.

Isn't it odd to realize that they feel they've got to take great pains to inform all their right-wing idiot voters that Mark Foley is actually gone bye-bye, and has been replaced, even though his name remains on the ballot?

It's probably just too damned complex.

I'd like to know why they think there's a need to educate their voters about something which is common knowledge.
