BAGHDAD (AFP) -
Iraq demobilized an entire police brigade suspected of links to sectarian death squads as a series of bombs exploded near a government minister's convoy, killing at least 21 people.

The blasts came as a US military spokesman said that Iraq had seen more car bombs in the past week than in any other week this year.
"The number of improvised explosive devices was also at an all-time high," Major General William Caldwell added, referring to the makeshift bombs that explode daily across Iraq.
The surge in violence in the 10 days since the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan has also seen a record number of US soldiers killed, with 10 deaths on Monday and Tuesday alone.
