Aide Says He Reported Foley 2 Years Ago
Oct 04 4:03 PM US/Eastern

By DEVLIN BARRETT
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON

A senior congressional aide said Wednesday that he alerted House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office two years ago about worrisome conduct by former Rep. Mark Foley with teenage pages.

Kirk Fordham told The Associated Press that when he was told about Foley's inappropriate behavior toward pages, he had "more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene."

The conversations took place long before the e-mail scandal broke, Fordham said, and at least a year earlier than members of the House GOP leadership have acknowledged.

60. Absolutely
The chorus will go something like this. Well when Clinton was acquitted in the impeachment trial it gave a signal to public officials that sexual misconduct was condoned. So see, it is all the Clenis' fault.

39. Yes that will work until his staff goes into CYA mode. Once they realize
that Hastert is likely to be forced out as Speaker and might even lose his seat they will have nothing to lose and everything to gain by thinking about their own futures beyond working for Fat Denny. Then watch out. They will all be stepping on each other to be the first to blow the whistle on Fat Denny.

the party of "personal responsibility" my ass. you wanna talk about a 30 yr. old story to make excuses for what the house leadership has covered up for 11 years (read washington post). where's the concern for the kids involved? this is not just political as the rightwing would like to have us believe, this is about the lives of young people, who were preyed upon by one of your own, and i think that we're gonna learn that there were payoffs and bribes involved, and dumping (giving to charity) the monies at this point won't work.

i'm convinced that this story is gonna turn out to be more than just about a pedophile, but it's gonna turn the house leadership (enablers) on its head, and it's already happening. Get used to it. When you hold yourself out to morally superior to the rest of us, you better make damned sure your own house isn't made of glass.

btw, welcome to DU....i think.

44. But in the meantime, we have to make sure that our people are ALL
abso-fuckin'-lutely IMMACULATE. Because if somebody on our side of the aisle pulls ANY sort of fast-n-loose one, the bad guys will be ALL OVER US, and any gains we made at their expense will be IMMEDIATELY drowned out. In fact, their echo chamber will make sure the next MANY news cycles will be all over our single faux-pas. They'll make MUCH more of it than is deserved, in order to drown out the Foley-etc. stuff, and bolster their own arguments that it isn't so bad because the other guys are crooks, too.

It's a very good point. I hope Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are leaning on everybody HARD to make sure their noses are clean. Remember, back in 1994, it was the banking scandal and other fuck-ups and assorted misbehavior that OUR guys were guilty of. Which made it all the easier for nasty newty and friends to take the House of Reps away from us. I don't want to be exiled out in the wilderness for ANOTHER 12 years. Our guys and gals would do VERY well to keep their own noses clean as whistles. We HAVE TO BE above reproach, ESPECIALLY now. We want the OTHER side dispirited, panicked, and in disarray. NOT ourselves. Besides, it makes it a lot easier to throw stones when you know there won't be any flying back at you, and nobody can accuse you (with any credibility) of living in a nice big glass house. One fuck-up is all it'd take to fuck us all.

56. The Evolution Of The Democratic Party
I have a theory that the Dem party is naturally less corrupt, because Repubs would have used it already. All the really sleazy Dems either became Repubs or have already been tossed (in general). What you're left with is what hasn't been winnowed out already. They're cleaner by necessity (generally speaking of course).

Hastert Denies Knowledge Of Foley's 2003 E-Mails to Pages

By ANDREW TAYLOR - Associated Press
October 3, 2006

WASHINGTON — The House speaker, Rep. Dennis Hastert, said yesterday that no Republican leaders saw lurid Internet exchanges between former Rep. Mark Foley and underage high-school pages and that he would have demanded his ouster if he'd known about them.

"As a parent and speaker of the House, I am disgusted," Mr. Hastert, a Republican of Illinois, told reporters after holding a meeting at the Capitol in the wake of the disclosure of the e-mails in 2003 to a page, which led to Mr. Foley's resignation last Friday. The page's home state was not immediately cited.

The speaker did not mention e-mail exchanges between Mr. Foley, a Florida Republican, and another page, from Louisiana, in 2005. Other House Republicans said they told Mr. Hastert about those exchanges months ago. Mr. Hastert has not disputed those accounts.

"Congressman Foley duped a lot of people," Mr. Hastert said. "I've know him for all the years he has worked in this House, and he deceived me, too."

http://www.nysun.com/article/40769

So if Fordham told Hastert in 2004, what else could it have been in reference to, if not this?

53. What is the difference between predator and pedophile?
There must be a different definition for each with obvious overlap?? Serial rapists would be considered sexual predators. Power over another person is clearly involved. Pedophiles involve children but then to me 16 year olds are children. Is Foley both?

62. AP says 3* years ago: Aide says he reported Foley 3 years ago

Aide says he reported Foley 3 years ago

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A senior congressional aide said Wednesday he told House Speaker
Dennis Hastert's office about worrisome conduct by Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record) toward teenage pages more than three years ago, long before officials have acknowledged becoming aware of the issue.

Kirk Fordham made his comments to The Associated Press in an interview as a Kentucky Republican canceled a campaign fundraising event with Hastert. Rep. Ron Lewis (news, bio, voting record) said he wants to know the facts behind a scandal that has roiled Republicans since last week.

"I'm taking the speaker's words at face value," Lewis said in an interview. "I have no reason to doubt him. But until this is cleared up, I want to know the facts.

"If anyone in our leadership has done anything wrong, then I will be the first in line to condemn it."

64. Fordham resigned Wednesday as chief of staff to Rep. Thomas Reynolds
Fordham said he was serving as Foley's chief of staff when he was told about the lawmaker's inappropriate behavior toward pages more than three years ago. He said he had "more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene" at the time.

Fordham declined to identify the officials in Hastert's office he spoke with.

Two members of the GOP leadership say they told Hastert this past spring they had heard Foley had sent overly friendly e-mails to a page. Hastert said over the weekend he does not recall those conversations, but has not disputed they took place.

Fordham resigned Wednesday as chief of staff to Rep. Thomas Reynolds (news, bio, voting record), R-N.Y., and said: "I never attempted to prevent any inquiries or investigation."

65. "Rather than trying to shift the blame on me,....."

.....He said he would fully disclose to the
FBI and the House ethics committee "any and all meetings and phone calls" regarding Foley's behavior that he had with senior staffers in the House leadership.

Fordham said one staffer he spoke with remains employed by a senior House Republican leader, but he declined to identify the person.

"Rather than trying to shift the blame on me, those who are employed by these House leaders should acknowledge what they know about their action or inaction in response to the information they knew about Mr. Foley prior to 2005," Fordham said.

At the time of his resignation, Fordham was serving as chief of staff for Reynolds, a member of the GOP leadership who has struggled to avoid political damage in the scandal's fallout.

69. Could this get any better???????
One topper after another! I hope and pray this means the House majority will turn Democrat in November. The Senate is too much to hope for (but I still am hoping).

Let the impeachment begin...

78. As far back as 2003-- And now he's naming names! Palmer.
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 06:58 PM by chill_wind
"Oct. 4, 2006 — Despite claims by senior congressional aide Kirk Fordham that he notified House Speaker Dennis Hastert's office more than two years ago about possible inappropriate contact between former Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., and underage congressional pages, the Speaker's office is insisting it did nothing wrong in its handling of the situation.

"That never happened," Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean told ABC News about the report.

But Fordham — a former chief of staff to Foley, who resigned as chief of staff to another member of the GOP leadership, Rep. Tom Reynolds, R-N.Y. — said that as far back as 2003, Hastert chief of staff Scott Palmer had been told that Foley was too friendly with pages. According to Fordham, Palmer spoke to Foley about the matter."

Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 07:25 PM by chill_wind
"I reached out to the Foley family, as any good friend would, because I was worried about their emotional well-being."

(per CNN, tried to keep the most explicit IM's from the press. To protect the Foley family, he infers). Not a freaking word about the well-being of the targeted kids' and their families amidst his rationale.

Even when Republicans know every word they utter on this is going to be magnified a million times, the real priorities come out, and they aren't pretty.

:eyes:

you guys have been all over the news trying to equate this with clinton/lewinski. and, according to you guys, it doesn't seem to matter that monica was a consenting adult, but that bill clinton was in a "position of power", so in those circumstances your argument doesn't hold water.

more importantly, you guys for too long have held yourselves out to be morally superior to the rest of us, and the hypocrisy is just stifling. none of you is concerned about the welfare of the young men involved, just how this damages you politically?

95. LA Times: Onetime Loyal Aide Now Stands to Undermine GOP
Onetime Loyal Aide Now Stands to Undermine GOP
Former staffer Kirk Fordham says he'll tell all to the FBI in the Foley case, poising him to take on the leadership he once served.
By Peter Wallsten and Tom Hamburger, Times Staff Writers
October 5, 2006

WASHINGTON — For 20 years, Kirk Fordham was a loyal staffer and strategist — rising from his early days as a Capitol Hill intern to the coveted post of chief of staff to a senior congressman.

But Wednesday, amid a scandal that has rattled Capitol Hill and ended the political career of Fordham's longtime boss, former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), the 39-year-old aide emerged as a central player in a saga that could bring down the same House GOP leadership that he worked so tirelessly to serve.
(snip)

As Foley began campaigning across the state, a South Florida weekly newspaper, the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, called on him to come out of the closet. It was Fordham who tried to persuade mainstream state political reporters to steer clear of the story, even as the White House moved aggressively to find a different candidate. When the Foley campaign accused Democratic activists of spreading the story, it was Fordham who singled out the "liberal gay press" for leading the charge, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

It was around that time that, based on Fordham's assertions this week, his loyalty was tested. Fordham now says he noticed "inappropriate behavior" by his boss related to the House page program and reported it to Hastert's office.
