MANILA: About 7,000 American and Filipino troops will hold joint ground, air and naval exercises late this month on the main island of Luzon, Philippine and US military officials said yesterday.
The Philippines, which is fighting protracted rebellions by communist and Muslim separatists, cements its close security ties with the United States through regular war games.
“These exercises are designed to improve interoperability, increase readiness and continue professional relationships between the United States and Philippine armed forces,” the US embassy said in a statement yesterday.
It said the two-week training would be much larger than military activities last year when about 5,000 troops from both sides staged amphibious landings, held live-fire exercises involving helicopters and armoured vehicles north of Manila.
