Teen With Medical Microchip Dies in Fla.
Teen Who Had Medical Information Microchip Implant Dies in Florida Motorcycle Crash

BOCA RATON, Fla. Oct 1, 2006 (AP)— A teen engineering prodigy who gained national attention in 2002 when he and his family received identification chip implants on live television was killed in a motorcycle accident, authorities said.

Derek Jacobs, 18, lost control of his motorcycle early Saturday and crashed into a guardrail and a pole, the Palm Beach County sheriff's office said. He was wearing a helmet.

"It was just a crazy accident of a bump or something, and he was catapulted," said his mother, Leslie Jacobs. "He had, of course, potential, because he was brilliant, and he was just a wonderful son. He wanted to make a difference in the world."

Derek was set to get his engineering degree this year after only two years at Florida International University. He wanted to be a neurosurgeon, his mother said.

18. Yes, they're death traps

Too bad young people (under 30 y.o. IMO) are naturally NOT cautious.

I remember riding on the back of my bf's Kawasaki 900 at over 100 mph in shorts and a tank top. The only thought that went through my mind at the time was that, if we cracked up, the end would come soon.

But now that I'm in my 40s, I will NOT get on the back of a bike with anyone other than my older brother. Perhaps go dirt bike riding through the Grand Canyon this spring with my brother and his friends. However, I will be in control so there will be no one to blame but myself.

Murdercycles - Yes! Especially since in congested traffic you have no protection and have no control over the actions of drivers. The best way to stay alive is to ride defensive - and with a constant tinge of fear in order to increase awareness AT ALL TIMES. :scared:

19. Motorcycles kill people whether they're cautious or not.
Several weeks ago, we were heading back to our house
with the grandkidlets when we came across a slow-down
on the highway. One the left side, smashed up against
the guardrail, was a toppled bike. A few feet farther
along, laying flat on the ground and looking mighty
unresponsive was the sans-helmet rider, along with
a few other stopped cars and some people standing
around looking at the likely organ donor.

Reading about this in the newspaper later, it turns out the
car in front of the cycle decided to make a sudden, illegal
turn through a gap in the median; the motorcyclist then
smashed up against the back of the nearly-stopped car and
earned a ride on a med-flight chopper (that arrived with
all the rest of the emergency equipment after we passed
by the scene; the highway ended up closed for a time to
allow the helicopter to land. load, and depart). I don't
actually know whether the cyclist died, but the outlook
for him was reported as grim, and we got to explain to
the grandkidlets why there was what looked like a dead
man lying along the highway shoulder.

Yes, he could have been wearing a helmet. Yes, he could
have left more space between himself and the car agead.
But this was an accident where, even though he wasn't
the principal cause of it, he was just as dead/disabled
as if he had been the cause.

Motorcycles are deadly.

6. Religious rightards have been saying for decades...
... that the "mark of the Beast" will be a microchip implanted under the skin. That goes all the way back to failed prophet (and current 700 Club news commentator) Hal Linsay and his book, "The Late, Great Planet Earth" from the 1970s.

7. You're incorect about Lindsey
You're incorect about Lindsey, I believe. If memory serves -- and it very well may not -- in his first couple of books in the seventies Lindsey was still worried about UPC codes being tatooed on people being the Devil's mark.

It wasn't until the early 80s and "microcomputers" becoming all the rage that microchips were the imminent threat.

I suspect that the ACTUAL Mark of the Beast will appear in the form of a magnetic, yellow ribbon on the back of one's SUV.

14. I sit corrected
Chatting with one of my neighbors, who grew up in the South when Lindsey was mandatory reading, said the same thing. It originally was tattoos and only latter changed in to microchips back when implantable microchips were first developed in the early to mid 80s. But still... :hi:

16. He might not be...or you both might be correct.
LGPE has been revised every year or two as Lindsay's predictions fail to materialize.

I forget how many different editions there are of that ridiculous book.

Odd that the Prophecy Crowd hasn't noticed that, but then they really aren't known for their critical thinking skills...

4. Every since i was buzzed by a car on my bike Ive been
too nervous to ride here in Florida, I drove for ages in Texas with no problem, but 2 months after moving here im going through an intersection and some tourist runs a red light, I came so close to a wreck my shoe has paint on it from rubbing across their bumper.. My behind STILL hasn't unpuckered! I hear of motorcycle/scooter fatalities every night on the news, its sad, im glad im not at risk of being part of those numbers anymore.. I would much rather sail my sailboat into a storm and challenge mother nature than play in florida traffic on a motorcycle...

9. Not brilliant enough to introspect on the relative dangers of motorcycles.
Sorry to hear about this kid, but "those who live by the cycle, tend to die by the cycle."

And, why would a kid pursuing an engineering degree want to be a neurosurgeon? I'm not saying he couldn't, but that sort of switch is quite drastic and suggests a lack of intellectual discipline.

that is a strong combination of skills for someone who wants to go into research and work on devices to assist people who have had severe brain injury

the kid's achievements at his age speak for themselves, he had plenty of discipline and the world is poorer because of this accident

like it or not, many people drawn to medicine are also drawn to risk -- many a doctor has gone down on his motorcycle or in his small aircraft, those of us who are cautious and shy away from blood and guts are probably not going to die on motorcyles but nor will we make great surgeons either

11. As a researcher who has worked on acute brain rehab wards...
I won't quibble over the engineering degree pursuing neurosurgeon aspect, but I can with some authority state that about 30-40% of the hard case, severe brain injury patients presenting for extensive inpatient rehab are MVA accident cases. Of those, more than 50% involved motorcycles or personal all terrain vehicles. Each of these cases regreted ever sitting down on a cycle...particularly those who required extensive craniotomies.

I would argue that it is not intelligent nor biologically adaptive to engage in high risk behaviors. High risk behaviors (not involving sex) tend to increase the chance that one would not pass on his/her genes to the next generation.

(more like a nightmare) that I accidentally hit someone on a motorcycle.

I don't I would take the risk myself, but they are thrilling to ride on. I don't understand the snarky comments about him not being so smart because he wanted to take the risk. Many brilliant people do live on the edge once in a while.
